what the chief executives of three leading U.S.
animal welfare organizations have to say about the promise of non-surgical sterilization and ACC&D, our fourth EsterilSol grant, awarded to the Sierra Leone
Animal Welfare Society, advances in contraceptives for U.S. wildlife, contraceptive research funded by the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, and the 10th International Symposium on GnRH
We hope you're doing well and succeeding in your work. As
always, we welcome you to contact us with any questions or comments, and we
thank you for your interest in new approaches to population control for dogs

Fourth EsterilSol Grant Awarded
|
Grantee Profile: Sierra Leone Animal Welfare Society
| |
Dr. Gudush Jalloh, director of the Sierra Leone Animal
Welfare Dr. Jalloh with Dr. Arun from India at ACC&D's symposium | Society (SLAWS) contacted ACC&D well over a year ago to ask about
how his organization might be able to use EsterilSol to sterilize more male dogs
in his community. His e-mail was actually one of those which inspired us to
create our EsterilSol Small Grants Program, so we were especially pleased to
award our fourth EsterilSol grant to SLAWS.
We were grateful to be able to offer Dr. Jalloh a
scholarship, sponsored by the Parsemus Foundation, to participate in our recent
4th International Symposium where he was trained in EsterilSol
administration and injection protocol.
Dr. Jalloh is the only practicing small animal veterinarian
in Sierra Leone, and he and his organization have done amazing things for the
animals there. In fact, despite living in the poorest country in the world,
SLAWS has vaccinated over 35,000 dogs and has sterilized over 13,000 dogs. We
look forward to hearing about what SLAWS can achieve with EsterilSol as an
added tool in their work!
We extend our gratitude to Best Friends Animal Society for funding the SLAWS EsterilSol grant!

Advances in Wildlife Contraception
|
Gonacon approved and OvoControl status changed
| |
Contraception is a desirable, humane method for controlling
wildlife populations. (Click here for a recent USDA pamphlet on wildlife
contraceptives.) Fortunately, recent events have increased access to
contraceptives for wildlife.
GonaCon Approval
GonaCon, a contraceptive vaccine for use in white-tailed
deer, has received regulatory approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). GonaCon will be available for use by licensed applicators in January,
2011. Though developed for deer, the product is currently being studied in wild
horses and squirrels, and a recent study showed that GonaCon does not
interfere with rabies vaccinations when administered to dogs. There is some
potential that this approach may be able to be used for contracepting dogs
and/or cats, though further research is needed.
OvoControl Reclassification
OvoControl, a contraceptive bait used to control pigeon
populations, has been reclassified by the EPA for "general use". Previously, OvoControl could be used only by licensed
applicators. This is a positive development which will allow many more property
managers and owners to control pigeon populations in a humane, non-invasive
way. (OvoControl is also registered for use in geese and doves, though use is
more restricted for these birds.) Click here to learn more about OvoControl and
this recent development.

Funding for Contraception Research
|
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Grand Challenges Explorations Grants
| The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Grand
Challenges Explorations Grants seek to find innovative ways to address health
problems common in developing countries. One recently-added category of grants
is focused on developing new contraceptive methods; ten grants were awarded
in the May funding cycle. Advances achieved by this research could not only
lead to great welfare improvements for humans, but could offer learning to
advance contraceptive methods for cats and dogs. To see the list of funded
projects, click here.
