Which Printer Should I Buy?
Okay, your printer has broken down or become too expensive to repair. It has been a reliable business machine for many years and now you need a new one. With so many choices, how do you decide?
Two criteria we recommend: purchase the right sized machine for the job, and buy the capabilities you need. Here are some suggestions for you to consider.
Buy the capabilities you need. Perhaps the printer you are replacing is more than 5 years old. Newer capabilities are available that are very affordable.
Scanning is becoming very popular to replace faxing and copying. Multi-function printers feature wonderful scan to email and scan to disk capabilities.
Color is another capability available at little extra cost, only the supplies costs are higher when you actually print in color. However, outside printing costs can be reduced by printing color pieces in-house.
Duplexing, or two-sided printing, saves on paper. This is available manually or automatically on many devices.
Other capabilities such as print speed, paper sizes, time to first page, networking, scan speed, energy usage, and memory size might be important to you based on your unique habits. Be sure to keep this in mind while shopping.
Buy the right sized device. It is important to know how many pages per month you intend to print on average. If you do not know, a rule of thumb is to determine the total number of pages printed on your old device and divide by the number of months you owned it. Most printers have a maximum and a recommended duty cycle. Purchase based on the recommended duty cycle, and it is a good idea to overbuy slightly. It is not good to purchase a 10,000 page per month machine when you are printing 1,000 pages, or vice versa.
