HPL CLOSED TUES., OCT. 9 FOR STAFF TRAINING
Please note that the library will be closed Tuesday, October 9 for staff training. We will reopen Wednesday, October 10.
 
WENDY'S FUNDRAISER is Oct. 25 
Save the date for Thurs., Oct. 25 for the Friends' fundraiser at Wendy's on 165th Street near Wal-Mart in Hammond. Dine in or drive-thru between 5 and 8 p.m. , and the Friends receive 15% of net proceeds.

 

FURRY ORANGE FRIEND GETS A NAME
If you've seen our YouTube video with our furry orange friend, The New Patron, you know how sad he is. Before he can get a library card, he needed a name! You voted, and the winning name is... Reed Ding. Watch for another video, when Reed will get his library card.

FOOD DRIVE FOR GREATER HAMMOND COMMUNITY SERVICES
HPL is a drop-off point for canned goods and nonperishable food items to benefit Greater Hammond Community Services' annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive. You may drop off your items between Wed., Oct. 31 and Wed., Nov. 14. (Note: this is NOT a Food for Fines. Donating will not reduce any fines or fees owed for damaged, lost, or overdue library items.)
 
HAMMOND HISTORICAL SOCIETY CEMETERY WALK IS SUNDAY
Hammond Historical Society's annual Cemetery Walk is Sun., Oct. 7 from 1-4 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, 6551 Calumet Ave., just south of White Castle. Come meet some "residents" of Concordia. Tickets, available at the gate, are $5 for age 12 and above, free for those under age 12. Bring comfortable walking shoes, and dress for the weather.

Mouse Basics: Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more. No experience required to attend this class.

Internet Basics:   

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse

or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Email Basics:  Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Word Basics: Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We''ll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Advanced classes: please allow 2 - 2.5 hours. 
There are no Advanced Classes in November or December.

 

Advanced Word:  (none in Nov. or Dec.) If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.  Familiarity with keyboard/ mouse and basic computer knowledge are required to attend these sessions.

 

Intro to Excel: (Thurs., Oct. 11 at 9:30 a.m.) Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic computer knowledge are required to attend these sessions.

 

PowerPoint: (Thurs., Oct. 18 at 9:30 a.m.) Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic computer knowledge are required to attend these sessions.

 

Letters & Resumes: (Thurs., Oct. 25 at 9:30 a.m.) Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. Attendees to this class will customize a resume template or build their own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of $0.10 per page.

Join us on the third Thursday for this free series, offering a different program each month:
  • Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.: "Writing Your Memoirs" with Dr. Meg DeMakas from IUN. This is part of the programming for Books to Bridge the Region 2012, whose theme is "Where in the World Are You From?"
     
  • Thurs., Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. "Holiday Entertaining" with Chef Kate Bradley.
    Chef Kate presents 5 holiday recipes that may be sampled by attendees:
    Dates Wrapped in Bacon;
    Wild Rice Pilaf;
    Butternut Squash and Sage Gratin;
    Caramelized Onions and Mushroom Casserole;
    and Mini Cranberry Cheesecakes.
    Maximum 60 for this program and EVERYONE must have a reservation; no walk-ins. FRIENDS MEMBERSHIP
Friends of the Library Hammond Ind., Inc., is a nonprofit group separate

from the library. The Friends support HPL by serving as advocates, and

by raising funds for programs or services that HPL could not otherwise provide. 

 

The Friends are always looking for new members. Membership year runs Jan-Dec.

The next Friends membership meetings are:

  • Sat., Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. (annual Friends meeting;
    combined meeting with Hammond Historical Society)

BOOK SALES 

The Book Sale Room is on the 1st floor, near the copy machine.  The room features a variety of books, paperbacks, videos, music, magazines, and vending machines. An ongoing sale takes place during library hours.  

  

FRIENDS HALF PRICE BOOK SALE  (*Excludes specially marked books and sets.) 

The last Friends Half-Price Sale of the year is Sat., Oct. 27. Remember that the Friends accept donations of books, magazines, movies and music. Just bring them to the library during regular hours. Upcoming half price sales are on the last Saturday of each month (no sale in November or December):
