We had a great Summer Reading Program, with lots of weekly programs. Now we're regrouping and preparing for Back to School.

  

Young ones and their parent or caregiver may attend our Early Literacy Programs:

  • Babies and Books (for infants):
    Thursdays at 10 a.m.: Aug. 23; Sept. 6 & 20
  • Tiny Tots Toddler Time (for active toddlers): Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.: Aug. 23; Sept. 6 & 20
  • Little Listeners (ages 3-5):
    Tuesdays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.: Aug. 28; Sept. 11 & 25

Programs for older youth include:

  • Tween Lego Club (grades 3-6): Tues., Sept. 11 at 3:45 p.m. 
  • Kids Can 2 (grades K-2):Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 3:45 p.m.
  • Books to Movie: Wed., Sept. 5 at 3:45 p.m.

The popularity of the Suzanne Collins "Hunger Games" trilogy comes to HPL. A Teen Hunger Games Party is Sat., Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.

FAMILY ESSAY CONTEST:  HPL celebrates Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month with a Family Essay Contest. Entries are accepted from Aug. 22 through Sept. 4 and must be brought to the library's Circulation Desk. Entries must be submitted by families, not by individual students. The theme is, "What does the concept of 'familia' (family) mean to you?" Complete rules can be found here.

National KIDS COUNT data shows Indiana's child poverty rate is 22%, up from 17% in 2005.  Overall, Indiana ranks 24th among states for the economic well-being of children and youth. RACE TO THE TOP DISTRICT: The U.S. Department of Education has finalized the application for the 2012 Race to the Top-District competition, which will provide nearly $400 million to support school districts in implementing local reforms that will personalize learning, close achievement gaps and help prepare all students for postsecondary success.

CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM: MISSING SCHOOL MATTERS offers tips for educators and parents on how to combat this problem.

ISTEP+ RESULTS AVAILABLE: The Indiana Department of Education (DOE) has released the latest test results for students in grades 3-8. These data can be useful for program planning and fundraising.

 

The DOE presents data by individual grade for the ISTEP+ exams in English, math, science and social studies.  Data are available from public and non-public schools as well as for public school corporations.  Test results also are organized by ethnicity, socioeconomic status, special education and for students classified as English Language Learners.

FRIENDS FUNDRAISERS

 

KEEP THE LIBRARY COVERED... HELP MAKE A QUILT. The Friends sponsor a 10-day "quilting bee" from Aug. 15-25. Donate $1 or more and write your name on a quilt square, to be made into a paper quilt.

 

If you'd like to decorate  your quilt square, you may take it home and then return the decorated square, or attend one of two special sessions:

  • Tues., Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Sat., Aug. 25 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Students and volunteers from Books, Brushes & Bands for Education will assist in decorating quilt squares. Decorating materials are being donated by The Golden Studio.

 

The quilt will be part of a multimedia exhibit by Books, Brushes & Bands for Education, to be displayed during September at the Hammond Arts Center, 5832 Hohman Ave., across from Harrison Park. The Friends will have informational materials available at the show's reception on Fri., Sept. 28 from 6-9 p.m.

WENDY'S FUNDRAISER: For everyone who eats at Wendy's at 1844 -165th Street, Hammond, (near Wal-Mart) on Thursday, Aug. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m., Wendy's will donate 15% of all proceeds. No coupon is needed, and the fundraiser is good in the restaurant or at the drive-thru, but ONLY at the Wendy's on 165th near Wal-Mart.
