The essay contest theme is "What does the concept of 'familia' (family) mean to you?" The contest is open to families. Each family unit may submit only one entry. Entries are accepted from Aug. 22 to Sept. 4, 2012. All entries must be delivered to the Hammond Public Library's Circulation Desk no later than Tues., Sept 4, at 8 p.m.

Friends of the Hammond Public Library Quilt Fundraiser
"Keep the Library Covered...Help Make a Quilt"
The Friends of the Hammond Public Library are raising funds and awareness by asking the public to "Keep the Library Covered... Help Make a Quilt." During a 10-day "quilting bee" from Aug. 15 to Aug. 25, quilt squares made from heavy paper will be available at the library's Circulation Desk for a donation of $1 or more. Donors will sign their name to the quilt squares.
Two opportunities allow donors to decorate their own squares: either Tues., Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.; or on Sat., Aug. 25 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the library, 564 State St. All materials for assembling and decorating the paper quilt are being donated by The Golden Studio. Volunteers and students from Books, Brushes & Bands for Education (BBB4E) will be available to decorate squares already purchased, and to assist those who wish to decorate their own squares.
The squares then will be assembled into a quilt, to be displayed at a BBB4E multimedia exhibit during the month of September at the Hammond Arts Center, 5832 Hohman Ave. The show opening is Fri., Sept. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m., at which information about the library and its Friends group will be available.
Plans are for the quilt to be exhibited in different venues. Information is with the Library at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 310. |
