HOLIDAY CLOSING:
Hammond Public Library closes at 5 p.m. on Tues. July 3.
The Library is closed on Wed., July 4 (Independence Day).

Happy Summer! To start off, here is a reminder about two Friends of the Library fundraisers:
- Friday, June 29 from 5 to 8 p.m.: order from Wendy's at 1844 165th St. in Hammond, and the Friends receive 15% of your order. You may eat in or use the drive-thru. We've lined up dates for the remainder of the year, which we'll post soon.
- Sat., June 30: shop the Half Price Book Sale at the Library.
The sale excludes specially marked items and sets.

Summer Reading is almost halfway through! Have you signed up yet? Summer Reading runs through July 31.
Four programs serve all ages.
Mark your calendar for a FREE family program!
Sat., July 7 at 1 p.m.: Creatures of the Night Coyote Chris from Silly Safaris presents live animals that are active at night!
DREAM BIG is the youth program, with two com ponents:
Read to Me is for youth who have parents, caregivers or older siblings read books to them. Those who complete the program receive a reading certificate and a glow-in-the-dark beach ball. Readers is the program for those who read on their own. Those who complete the program receive a reading medal.

OWN THE NIGHT is the teen program, for those in grades 7-12. Programs include Teen Book Club, Teen Movies, Teen Gaming and crafts. Teens may earn points by reading and also by attending programs, making them eligible to win the grand prize: one lucky teen will win an 8 gb iPod Touch! So far, teens have made monsters, and discussed books with their friends at Teen Book Club.

BETWEEN THE COVERS is the adult program for age 18+. Read and enter to win some very cool prizes.

Computer Classes

Basic classes: Please allow 60-90 minutes.
Mouse Basics: Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more. No experience required to attend this class. Monday, July 9 at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10 at 6 p.m. Monday, July 16 at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 31 at 2 p.m.
Internet Basics:
An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse
or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Email Basics: Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Word Basics: Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We''ll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Advanced classes: please allow 2 - 2.5 hours. *NOTE* Our July print newsletter was in error. There are no advanced classes in August. Advanced Classes will resume in September.
Advanced Word: Friday, July 6 at 9:30 a.m.
If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more. Familiarity with keyboard/ mouse and basic computer knowledge are required to attend these sessions.
Intro to Excel: Friday, July 13 at 9:30 a.m.
Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic computer knowledge are required to attend these sessions.
PowerPoint: Friday, July 20 at 9:30 a.m.
Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic computer knowledge are required to attend these sessions.
Letters & Resumes: Friday, July 27 at 9:30 a.m. Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. Attendees to this class will customize a resume template or build their own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of $0.10 per page. |

BOOK SALES
The Book Sale Room is on the 1st floor, near the copy machine. The room features a variety of books, paperbacks, videos, music, magazines, and vending machines. An ongoing sale takes place during library hours.
FRIENDS HALF PRICE BOOK SALE (*Excludes specially marked books and sets.) The next Friends Half-Price Sale is Sat., June 30. Remember that the Friends accept donations of books, magazines, movies and music. Just bring them to the library during regular hours.
