CHANGE IN TUTORING HOURS

Due to circumstances beyond our control, reading tutors are no longer available on Wednesday evenings or Fridays.  Tutors are still available on Mondays from 4 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 4:30 p.m.

STAFF PREPARES FOR SUMMER READING

Youth Services staff will visit area schools to promote this year's Summer Reading Program, "Dream Big: READ!"

 
If you'd like HPL youth staff to visit your school, or if you'd like to visit the library, please call (219) 931-5100, Ext. 336. For grades 7-12, please call the Teen Librarian, (219) 931-5100, Ext. 351. 

Please contact us at least two weeks in advance. This allows us to offer you a pleasant library experience.

Summer Reading sign-up starts June 1. The program runs through July 31. Programs will serve all ages:

  • Read to Me, for infants and those who do not
    read independently
  • Readers, for those who read on their own
  • Teens, for grades 7-12
  • Adults

The library is planning a full program schedule for June and July. Details are on our website.

  

Young ones and their parent or caregiver may attend our Early Literacy Programs:

  • Babies and Books (for infants):
    Thursdays at 10 a.m.
  • Tiny Tots Toddler Time (for active toddlers): Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
  • Little Listeners (ages 3-5):
    Tuesdays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.

Other youth programs include:

  • Tween Lego Club (grades 3-6) on Mondays
  • Tween Science Club (grades 3-6) on Wednesdays
  • Kids Can 2 (K-grade 2) on Tuesdays
  • Readers Theater (K-6th) on Thursdays, which culminates in a performance of "Stellaluna" in July.
  • Summer Movie Fridays
  • AND... Silly Safaris present a special program featuring nocturnal animals, "Creatures of the Night," on Saturday, July 7 at 1 p.m.

Aysha Haq, teen librarian, encourages teens to sign up starting June 1 for the teen program, "Own The Night." The first 15 teens to sign up receive a free book. There will be several teen programs, and attending any teen summer reading program will get teens an extra drawing slip for this year's grand prize-an 8GB iPod Touch!

Programs include two Teen Book Clubs; two Teen Movies; two Teen Gaming; a Make-Your-Own-Monster, and to wrap things up, a Teen Ice Cream Social on Aug. 4.

Youth Service America and State Farm Good Neighbor Student Achievement Grants

State Farm has teamed up with Youth Service America to offer grants of up to $1,000 for programs that enhance student achievement through service-learning in K-12 public schools in the US, or the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick.

Each grant will engage participating teachers and students in a service and learning program that promotes academic achievement, workplace readiness, and stronger communities. The grant requires a twelve- to fourteen-week semester of service.

MetLife Foundation Afterschool Innovator Awards

The Afterschool Alliance and the MetLife Foundation are seeking nominations of exemplary afterschool programs serving middle school youth for the MetLife Foundation Afterschool Innovator Awards. Nominees are sought in four categories:

  • Afterschool and digital learning: for programs that have demonstrated success with leveraging digital technology to facilitate learning experiences, enhance technical skills, and strengthen critical thinking across core subject areas.
  • Afterschool and arts: for programs that have demonstrated success in using the arts as means to strengthen self-confidence and self-expression, to build community, and to improve academic and skills development.
  • Afterschool and parent involvement/engagement: for programs that have demonstrated success in creatively engaging parents to help them become more involved in students' learning both in and outside of school.
  • Afterschool and school improvement: for programs that have successfully utilized school improvement grant funding to help promote positive change and improved academic outcomes in partnering schools.

Mario Savio Young Activist Award

The Mario Savio Memorial Lecture Fund is accepting nominations for the annual Mario Savio Young Activist Award. The award is presented each year to a young person (or persons) with a deep commitment to human rights and social justice and a proven ability to transform this commitment into effective action. The recipients should have demonstrated leadership ability, creativity, and integrity. Preference will be given to candidates who have not been widely recognized and do not have personal privilege or a strong institutional base of support.

  

To be eligible, nominees must be between the ages of 16 and 26; engaged in activism for social change related to peace, human rights, economic or social justice, or freedom of expression; working within the context of an organization, social movement, or larger community effort; and considered by others within that context as an inspirational leader or motivating force. The nominees' work must be based in the United States.

Anyone may nominate a candidate, including members of the general public.

The award carries a cash prize of $6,000, to be divided equally between the prize-winner and an organization of his or her choosing. The award will be presented at an award ceremony in Berkeley, California (travel expenses paid).

Target Stores Grants for Arts and Culture in Schools, Early Childhood Reading

Every year, the Target Store Grant program provides grants to K-12 schools and other nonprofit organizations working to provide reading and arts programs for children and youth. Target Early Childhood Reading Grants are awarded to schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations to support programs such as afterschool reading events and weekend book clubs. Grants are intended to help foster a love of reading and encourage children, preschool through third grade, to read with their families.
 

Target Arts and Culture in Schools Grants are intended to enhance classroom curricula by bringing music, dance, drama, and visual arts programs into the classroom. These grants are designed to help bring performers to schools so children can experience the arts and learn new forms of self-expression. Eligible programs include in-school performances, artist in residency programs, and workshops in schools.

 

Grants in both funding categories will be for $2,000 each.

Eligible applicants must be nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and schools, libraries, and public agencies.

UPCOMING CONFERENCE
An upcoming statewide conference, designed specifically for school counselors and mentoring organizations, will provide useful information from national and state experts that can help students be successful in school, career and life.

 

The Postsecondary Counseling Institute will be held June 25-26 in Carmel.  Last year's event received a 100 percent approval rating from school counselors for addressing the following concerns:

  • Two-thirds of all jobs require a postsecondary degree or credential
  • Indiana ranks 41st among states (in a nation that ranks 16th in the world) in postsecondary attainment
  • For every 100 Indiana students who start high school, only 32 will earn a postsecondary degree or credential within six years of graduating from high school
  • Indiana's student-to-counselor ratio in schools is 539:1, the eighth worst in the nation
  • A recent survey conducted by the Indiana Partnerships Center revealed, "One salient fear was that parents would miss something (related to postsecondary education)
  • A student survey conducted by Learn More Indiana found that only 26 percent of low-income middle and high school students know how to apply for need-based financial aid.

In response, the Postsecondary Counseling Institute will deliver timely workshops on:

  • Creating a college-going culture;
  • Admissions standards;
  • Financial aid;
  • Career exploration tools; and
  • Apprenticeship and certificate programs.

TUMBLEBOOK LIBRARY, TUMBLEREADABLES

HPL now offers:

  • TumbleBook Library, animated talking picture books, which teach young children the joys of reading.
  • Tumble Readables, which are read-along titles for late elementary, middle school and high school students.
  • OneClick Digital auiobooks, which can be downloaded to iPods and Apple devices and Mp3 players, as well as to personal computers. 

 

FRIENDS FUNDRAISER

Help the Friends of the Library raise funds to benefit the Library. For everyone who eats at Wendy's at 1844 -165th Street, Hammond, (near Wal-Mart) on Thursday, April 26 from 5 to 8 p.m., Wendy's will donate 15% of all proceeds. No coupon is needed, and the fundraiser is good in the restaurant or at the drive-thru, but ONLY at the Wendy's on 165th near Wal-Mart.
