Greetings!

The Friends of the Library conduct their monthly half-price sale on Saturday, March 31 (not March 24, as noted in today's Times. We apologize for any inconvenience.)

Mark your calendar for a Friends fundraiser
at Wendy's, 1844 165th St., Hammond (near Wal-Mart) on Thurs., March 29. From 5 to 8 p.m., the Friends will receive 15% of all revenue, both in the restaurant and the drive-thru. So bring the family to Wendy's next Thursday between 5 and 8 p.m., and help the Friends raise money to support the library.

HPL Presents: Join us Thursday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. for "Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease: The Basics."  This is a free program. A representative from the Alzheimer's Association provides descriptions of the various causes of dementia, and the difference between typical aging and problematic memory changes. How Alzheimer's affects the brain; causes and risk factors; and information on obtaining a diagnosis is also covered. Just RSVP by clicking here, or call HPL at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 310.

Now available: OneClick digital downloadable audiobooks, which you may download to your PC, to iPods or Apple products, or to mp3 players. Also new is TumbleBook Library, which are animated talking picture books that teach young children the joys of reading. And TumbleReadables are read-along titles for late elementary, middle and high school students.

Friends Fundraiser:
We mentioned the Wendy's fundraiser above. See below for additional dates, through June. This is only at the Wendy's at 1844 - 165th St. (near Woodmar Mall and Wal-Mart) Just eat at Wendy's between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on the dates below, and the Friends receive 15% of all purchases.

Looking for tax forms? They're on the 2nd floor, near the Information Desk. Staff cannot answer tax questions, but can direct you to books about tax preparation, and can provide information on tax preparation volunteers in Northwest Indiana.

DVD fee: To help defray our budget shortfall, the library now charges $1 for each DVD checked out. This fee is nonrefundable. At this time, the $1 fee is not charged when borrowing video games, VHS tapes, CDs or audiobooks.  Overdue fines for videos remain $1 a day.  

 

Coming in June: Advanced computer classes for adults.

HPL will offer advanced computer classes on a rotating schedule, starting in June. These classes are for those who are comfortable using a computer and are familiar with Microsoft Word, but want to expand their knowledge of Word, and learn new programs. Familiarity with mouse, keyboard and Word are required for these classes. Advanced Word; Intro to Excel; PowerPoint; and Letters and Resumes will be offered in evening sessions in June, day sessions in July. Watch future newsletters and library flyers for details.

Mouse Basics: Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more. No experience required to attend this class.

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse

We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Word Basics: Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We''ll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills are required for this class.

Reading Tutors 

The Hammond Public Library and Calumet College of St. Joseph offer FREE reading tutoring to students in Kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service; no appointment is required.    NOTE: Due to circumstances beyond our control, tutoring is unavailable on Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons.

Friends of the Library Hammond Ind., Inc., is a nonprofit group separate
from the library. The Friends support HPL by serving as advocates, and
