Vol. 10:16   August 12, 2011

Greetings!

The Alzheimer's Association is sponsoring a three-part series of free programs featuring information on a variety of topics that are of interest to caregivers.

These programs are free and open to the public. Programs take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Hammond Public Library, 564 State St., Hammond, Ind. on the following Thursdays:

August 18 - Know the 10 Warning Signs provides an understanding of the difference between age-related memory loss and Alzheimer's and what to do if you or someone you know has signs of the disease. View video footage of real people who are living with the early stages of dementia and their families addressing fears and myths associated with Alzheimer's disease.

September 15 - Legal and Financial Planning for the Future: A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can change plans families have for the future.  This program covers important legal and financial information to consider as the disease progresses and plans are made. The speaker will be a local Elder Law Attorney.

October 20 - Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease: The Basics - This program provides descriptions of the various causes of dementia and the difference between typical aging and problematic memory changes. How Alzheimer's affects the brain, causes and risk factors and information on obtaining a diagnosis will also be covered.

Reservations are encouraged as seating is limited. Attend one or more programs. To reserve your space, or for additional information, please view www.alz.org/indiana or call the Alzheimer's Association Helpline at 1-800-272-3900.

Books to Bridge the Region, the 7-county "One Book" initiative, is i.n its fifth year. The 2011 theme is "Learning From the Past; Empowering Our Future," and the books have World War II as a theme. Libraries, schools and organizations are encouraged to plan programs around the books and the theme. The E. B. Hayward Branch features World War II-themed programming through December.

Fall Book Discussion is at 10 a.m. on these Fridays:

Sept. 16: Hart's War by John Katzenbach (*Books to Bridge the Region adult title)- Tommy Hart, law student turned airplane navigator, waits out the war in a POW camp. He is ordered to defend Lincoln Scott, a Tuskegee Airman accused of murder. Why do Scott's comrades seem to be in a rush to justice?

Sept. 30: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - The author of Seabiscuit chronicles the true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner turned World War II airman, whose bomber crashes in the South Pacific.

Oct. 14: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows - As London is emerging from the shadow of World War II, writer Juliet Ashton discovers her next subject in a book club on Guernsey--a club born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi after its members are discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island.

Oct. 28: The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman - True story of the Zabinskis who managed the Warsaw Zoo during World War II, and utilized it to save not only many animals, but hundreds of Jews.

Friday Matinee (free movie) is at 1:30 p.m. on these Fridays:

Sept. 9: The Tuskegee Airmen, starring Laurence Fishburne. Watch the story of black airmen during World War II, trying to prove themselves to a reluctant military. This is a good way to set the scene for the discussion of the book, Hart's War, the following week.

Oct. 14: Hart's War, starring Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell. If you attend the Sept. 16 discussion of the book, come watch the film version, which is different in several respects.

Nov. 11: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. (Film version of Books to Bridge the Region's young adult title). Bruno's family shelters him from his father's job as camp commandant. The lonely Bruno befriends a young Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence.

Dec. 9: From Here to Eternity stars Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr; based on the novel by James Jones. In 1941 Hawaii, a private is punished for not boxing on his unit's team, while his captain's wife and second in command are falling in love.
