SUMMER READING is UNDERWAY
 
Hammond Public Library offers four Summer Reading Programs, running through July 30.

  

The youth program, "One World, Many Stories,"  features a Readers program for independent readers, and a Listeners program for those who don't read on their own. For teens, the theme is "You Are Here," and for adults, "Novel Destinations."

The Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition partners with Hammond Reads and other groups on "Time Out for Reading." This year, grab a red nose and bookmark, and join thousands of teachers and students who will read Friday, September 30, from 10 to 10:15 a.m.
  
The Coalition again partners with Books to Bridge the Region, the "one book" program covering seven Northwest Indiana counties, to deliver "Lit Kits" of materials to each school, and each public library, in Lake, Porter, Jasper, LaPorte, Newton, Starke and Pulaski counties. Kits will be delivered to library or media specialists, or to the designated school contact. Each school will receive the book appropriate for that grade level (K-6 schools will receive the children's and YA books; high schools will receive YA and Adult books, etc.)

"Taming Technology: Reducing Risk in Youth-Serving Programs"

This Webinar will provide insight into technology risks, guidelines for safe practices, and access to helpful resources. Register now to benefit from practical, relevant recommendations for your youth-serving program.

WHAT: A 90-minute Webinar on reducing technology risks

SPEAKER:

Paul Timm is a board-certified Physical Security Professional (PSP) and the President of RETA Security. He serves on the Illinois Terrorism Task Force, is a member of ASIS International, and is part of the International Association of Professional Security Consultants. Paul has been trained by the National Organization for Victims Assistance (NOVA) and is an experienced School Crisis Assistance Team volunteer. He is certified in Vulnerability Assessment Methodology (VAM) through Sandia National Laboratories and the ALPHA assessment methodology.

Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership funds Education Projects

 CGP's Education Grants program seeks to increase awareness and understanding of Japan in the US through support of teacher training, curriculum development and community outreach efforts addressing the needs of K-12 students, teachers and the larger community. CGP welcomes creative and innovative approaches that may be replicated in other areas. CGP hopes to provide a foundation for deeper mutual understanding, to build a stronger US-Japan relationship, and to nurture a global outlook and active interest in world affairs. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded for projects that commence between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis and applicants will be notified of the decision 1-2 months after formal submission of the proposal. Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy 2012 National Grant Competition

Deadline: September 9, 2011
 

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy has announced its 2012 National
Grant competition, which supports nonprofits working to develop or expand projects designed to promote the literacy skills of adult primary caregivers and their children.

To be considered for a grant, applicant organizations must have current nonprofit or public status, have been in existence two or more years as of the date of the application, and have maintained fiscal accountability. Applicants must operate an instructional literacy program that has been in existence for at least two years
and must include one or more of the following components: literacy for adults, parent education, pre-literacy or literacy instruction for children pre-K to grade 3, and/or intergenerational literacy activities. N

Indiana's Digital Resources: Making Them Work for You!

Tuesday, June 21, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. (EDT)

This one-day workshop will introduce participants to Indiana's digital resources that are freely available online and teach you how to use them effectively.  These resources include Indiana Memory, the Indiana Digital Archives, INSPIRE, and the State Data Center.  A computer lab will be available for hands-on experience with individual resources.

 

Keynote speakers include Andrew Mink, Director of Outreach and K-12 Education for the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, and David Bodenhamer, director of The Polis Center.

 

This workshop is designed for educators, genealogists, historians and the general public. Registration is $30 and includes lunch. There are a limited number of scholarships available for K-12 educators on a first-come, first served basis.

 

This workshop is made possible by the Indiana State Library through a Library Services and Technology Act grant made available from the Institute for Museum and Library Services awarded to the Friends of the Indiana State Archives, Inc. Partnering organizations are the Indiana Historical Bureau, the Indiana Council for History Education, the Indiana State Archives, and The Polis Center.
