Greetings!
Go back in time 150 years. States were leaving the Union to form the Confederacy, and blacks were still enslaved. Shots were fired at Fort Sumter, sparking the Civil War (also known as the War Between the States).
The war splintered families who served on both sides, and the Union Army, while employing men of color, did not immediately accept them into their ranks. Wendy St. Jean, Ph.D., explains the era in her talk, "Black Soldiers in Indiana: A Civil War Experience."
Teens and adults can learn more about this chapter in history on Thurs., March 31 at 2 p.m. at the E. B. Hayward Branch. Dr. St. Jean is assistant professor of history at Purdue University Calumet. Her talk is presented as part of the initiative, "We the People: A More Perfect Union." Nearly 1,500 African Americans from Indiana participated in the Civil War. Hear their story in this free presentation.
