Child poverty rate increases: An analysis by the Annie E. Casey Foundation's KIDS COUNT Data Center shows that the child poverty rate in the United States jumped from 18 percent in 2007 to 20 percent in 2009.

Based on recently released poverty figures from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, the KIDS COUNT analysis found that there were 14.7 million children in households with incomes below the poverty threshold in the United States in 2009 - 1.6 million more than in 2007, before the current recession began.

The analysis also found wide variation in child poverty rates across districts nationwide. Indiana's Overall Rank is 33. A state's Overall Rank is determined by the sum of the state's standing on each of 10 measures of the condition of children arranged in sequential order from highest/best (1) to lowest/worst (50). Data for Indiana is available at http://datacenter.kidscount.org/data/bystate/Default.aspx?state=IN

The Dictionary Project recently provided a new dictionary to each third grade student in a Hammond school. This is a joint project of Hammond Rotary, Hammond Reads, and the Telecomm Pioneers. Members of these organizations visited local schools to present the dictionaries to students.

Entries for Hammond Reads' 10th annual Essay Contest are accepted from November 29, 2010 through January 28, 2011. This year's theme is "How Can Reading Make the World a Better Place?" There is a rule change for schools this year. While Hammond Reads appreciates the participation and enthusiasm from schools, as an all-volunteer organization its members are no longer able to input and read all the essays received. Hammond Reads is asking teachers to submit only the top three entries from their classroom. Hammond Reads still will send certificates of participation to schools, for teachers to distribute to each student who wrote an essay, whether that essay was submitted for judging or not. Complete rules are on the essay contest flyer, available as a PDF.
