Dear ,
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. Encourage your students to get their library card, or to renew their card if it has expired.
Wi-Fi coming: HPL received a grant for $5,764 to purchase equipment and install wireless access at Main Library and branches. Wireless (WiFi) access will be available soon, allowing patrons to use their own notebook computers, smart phones and other mobile devices to access the Internet at HPL. This will alleviate some wait times for public computers and allow users to use their own software while in the library.
This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
Time Out for Reading and Books to Bridge the Region are delivering "Lit-Kits" of materials for the 2010 initiatives. Check with your media specialist, or the Time Out or Books to Bridge contact at your school. Details are at www.nwiliteracy.org or www.books2bridge.org. The Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition, Hammond Reads, and other organizations, along with the U.S. Federal Courthouse, are sponsoring Literacy Palooza on Wed., Sept. 15 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Get your Time Out for Reading red nose supplies at the event, which includes historic figures and a silent auction. RSVP by Sept. 7 at 219-852-6515. |

Back to School Tips:
Library staff will be happy to help your students find resources for homework, reports, and projects. Please contact us to see what we have available, and how we can work together to make sure needed resources are available.
World Book Kids has some new features coming soon:
a new design; a tool to help students find information about important people; dozens of age-appropriate science fair projects; interactive maps and outline maps and flags; "Compare Places," a tool for researching and comparing continents, countries, states, and provinces; and dozens of interactive educational games. From our home page, just go to Online Databases to Search, OR the Just for Kids page, and click the World Book Online logo. Another cool database is Global Road Warrior, which teaches students about different countries, their customs, language, currency, foods, and much more. It's also helpful if you travel abroad. Both World Book Kids and Global Road Warrior are available on library computers, or from home using an HPL library card number (found on the back of the card).

State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants encourage semester-long projects (following YSA's Semester of Service framework) that launch on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, Jan. 17, 2011, and culminate on Global Youth Service Day, April 15-17, 2011.
Eligible candidates include teachers, service-learning coordinators, and students in a public school, or staff and youth in a community-based organization working with a public school. YSA will host two application webinars, Sept. 7 and Oct. 7, for applicants to learn more about developing a successful project.

Target Offers K-12 School Field Trip Grants Deadline: Sept. 30, 2010 http://sites.target.com/site/en/company/page.jsp?contentId=WCMP04-031880
The Target Field Trip Grants program will award five thousand grants of $700 each to schools across the United States for the upcoming school year. Teachers can use a grant to fund a school field trip that connects their curriculum to out-of-school experiences. Education professionals who are at least 18 years old and are employed by an accredited K-12 public, private, or charter school in the United States that maintains 501(c)(3) or 509(a)(1) tax-exempt status are eligible to apply. Educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, and classified staff at these institutions must be willing to plan and execute a field trip that will provide a demonstrable learning experience for students.
Grant funds are best used for visits to art, science, and cultural museums; community service or civic projects; career enrichment opportunities; and other events or activities away from the school facility. Funds may be used to cover field trip-related costs such as transportation, ticket fees, food, resource materials, and supplies.
The Target Field Trip Grants program is managed and administered entirely by Scholarship America.
