HPL recently received two grants to benefit youth:

Two AWE (Advanced Workstations for Education) Bilingual Early Literacy Computers for the E.B. Hayward and Howard branches were purchased with funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Opportunity Online Grant. Main Library's Youth Services received three AWE computers in 2009 from an LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) grant.

AWE computers have color-coded keyboards and are equipped with more than 45 fun learning programs for ages 2 to 10 in both English and Spanish. Titles include: Sesame Street Let's Make a Word, JumpStart Spanish, Green Eggs and Ham, Stellaluna, Reader Rabbit, Millie's Math House, Sammy's Science House, and SpongeBob SquarePants Typing.

HPL received the We the People Bookshelf, a program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Each year NEH identifies a theme important to the nation's heritage and selects classic books that embody that theme, geared to readers from K-12. The 2010 theme was "A More Perfect Union."

Youth Services will create a We the People blog geared towards children. Children will learn how to use the blog, and have fun with reading and technology.

In addition to introducing young readers to good literature, the Bookshelf promotes understanding of abstract or general ideas through the power of particular stories.

ASM 'Living in a Material World' grants

Eligibility: : K-12 teachers
Deadline: May 25, 2010
Funds:$500
Contact: ASM World Headquarters, 9639 Kinsman Rd, Materials Park, OH 44073;
(440) 338-5151.

ASM International is the society dedicated to serving the materials science and engineering profession. The ASM Materials Education Foundation invites teachers to bring creativity and expanded knowledge into K-12 science classes by entering the Living in a Material World grant competition. The Foundation's mission is to excite young people in the idea of materials, science, and engineering careers. Students rarely have the opportunity to learn about these sciences, and often do not hear about materials careers until it is too late to plan.

Materials are the basis of the design of products that enhance the quality of life. Students will learn how important it is to develop the metals, glasses, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers that are at the heart of all new systems. Teachers must make lessons in materials sciences part of a broader curriculum, and ASM International members will work closely with teachers who win these grants to develop the lessons.

NAIS Challenge 20/20 invites global partnerships between classrooms

Eligibility: Public, private elementary or secondary schools worldwide.
Deadline: August 16, 2010.
Funds: Classroom partnerships with international schools; networking opportunities
Contact: NAIS, Attn.: Ioana Simona Suciu Wheeler, 1620 L St., Suite 1100, Washington, DC 20036-5695; wheeler@nais.org.

The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) invites K-12 schools to participate in this year's Challenge 20/20. The program arranges for schools to be involved in partnerships with classrooms in another country. The challenge invites partner classrooms to work together and tackle a global problem in a way they can address locally.

This program is an online relationship between classrooms in the United States and abroad. Eligible participants are public or private schools located anywhere in the world, and partnerships may consist of two or three schools. Some schools may already have a school or schools as partner(s); for those that do not, NAIS will assign schools with which to partner. There are two applications online-one for schools without partners, and one for schools that already have partners.
