Greetings!

Picture of libraryCelebrate Día at HPL!

Children's Day/Book Day, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día), is a celebration of children, families, and reading held annually on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Día is an enhancement of Children's Day, which began in 1925 to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children's book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found El día de los niños/El día de los libros.

Recalling a Bygone Era in Racing

Auto racing historian Jerry Murawski gives an historical presentation on Hammond's Roby Speedway on Sat., May 1 at 2 p.m. at Main Library.

Murawski, a Chicago Heights, Ill. resident, has spent years researching and documenting the 1-mile dirt speedway, which operated between 1920 -1936.The track was located west of Indianapolis Boulevard, bordered by 108th Street on the north, 112th Street on the south and Avenue A to the west, just east of the Hammond/Chicago border.

Part of a threesome of horse racing tracks built in the late 1800s in the Hammond/Whiting area, the Roby track became a popular Midwestern auto racing facility in the 1920s and '30s with numerous drivers testing their skills. Many went on to compete in the Indianapolis 500.
