Dear , NEW! HPL now offers World Book Web via library computers, OR via home, school or office by entering your HPL card number.
World Book Web contains:- World Book Online for Kids: Colorful tabs lets children find games, activities, science projects, maps, biographies and a dictionary, as well as special subject categories.
- World Book Online Info Finder: A search box lets you search by subject, or alphabetically. You can also connect to the websites of newspapers worldwide. A Biography Center, Science Projects and a variety of research tools help teens and adults.
- World Book Reference Center: Interactive Earth, Timelines, computer and web tutorials, reference and citation
- Winter Reads for Adults runs Jan. 2-Jan. 30. It's simple to enter; just check out a book and receive an entry ticket. You may enter as many times as you wish to be eligible for the drawing of a gift basket of winter treats. One gift basket will be given away at each HPL location.
- Hammond Reads 9th annual Essay Contest:
All schools may participate in the 9th annual Hammond Reads Essay Contest. Entries are accepted through Jan. 22, 2010. This year's theme is "What book would I want my family to read, and why?" Information is with Linda Swisher, the library's Public Information Coordinator at 219-931-5100, Ext. 310. You may also download a flyer. The school with the greatest percentage of entries per number of students will receive a certificate and a box of new books.

All Hammond Library locations are closed on these dates: Mon., Jan. 18 Mon., Feb. 15
- NEW! A story time for day care centers is held one Monday a month at 10:30 a.m. at Main Library.
Dates for 2010 are: Feb. 8 March 8 April 12 Sept. 13 Oct. 11 Nov. 8 Dec. 13
Day care centers must register before the first Monday of the month by calling (219) 931-5100, Ext. 336.

Intel Schools of
Distinction Awards Program recognizes U.S. schools that demonstrate 21st century teaching and learning
environments and implement innovative programs that inspire their students to
excel in math and science. The awards program is open to K-12 public, private,
charter, and parochial schools in the United States, Department of Defense
Dependents Schools, and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools. Eligibility is limited
to accredited schools that are publicly funded and/or nonprofit. Home schools
are not eligible. To be considered, schools must develop an environment and
curricula that meet or exceed benchmarks put forth by national mathematics and
science content standards. In order to be able to judge the impact of a school's
program, program judges will need to review at least three years of results
