A Gift from the Heart

Greetings!

This past week, a friend's necklace caught my eye. It was a widow's mite set in silver. It reminded me of a story I wanted to share over a year ago with you. It is Lydia's story.

Lydia was probably 8 years old when this happened. I was in the office at Covenant and John, Lydia's dad, called and wanted to come by with Lydia. I really didn't know what to expect but when she walked in with a bike and a sack full of change I knew it would be cool. As it turned out, Lydia wanted to bless foster children. She had it set in her heart to help kids that she knew weren't doing so well. So... she gave.

I was overwhelmed the day Lydia came into Covenant. She gave with her heart, she gave cheerfully and she gave sacrificially. Lydia could have kept the bike and spent her savings but instead she poured it out on my desk and gave. I'll tell you, Lydia's gift wasn't the biggest donation that year in terms of finances and numbers but it was as far as heart and compassion.

I learned greatly from Lydia that day. We can give and give and give but it doesn't matter if we are doing it with the wrong motivation. Secondly, it doesn't matter what you give but that you give. It is difficult for God to pour blessings into a closed fist. This season, open your heart and open your hand and witness that hand of God filling every need. May Lydia inspire us all to give to bless others!

The Great Reason to Give

7Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

~ 2 Corinthians 9:7 ~

God Loves a Cheerful Giver

I can still remember the smile on Lydia's face that day. She was beaming. She was shy but beaming. Her radiance wasn't from winning a raffle or receiving a gift but from giving! Lydia found out the truth that it is "better to give than receive" (Acts 20:35).

This season, you will be approached on so many levels to give. How do you respond? Pray. Pray and give cheerfully. You will never go wrong in giving. Scripture doesn't tell us that God loves a "researched" giver but a cheerful giver. So ... give. Decide what you can do and do it!

The joy of giving doesn't depend on the gift but on your heart. When Lydia gave Covenant her bicycle and change it went pretty quick but I believe God multiplied that gift and met the needs of many. In fact, that year was an amazing year of ministry and impact for Covenant. Could that be related to Lydia's gift? You tell me! Can the boys gift of fish and bread feed thousands?

This season give what you can. You may not have many resources but you do have some. Give! Give what you can and give cheerfully. If you don't want to give and you don't like this devotion that's fine but you are missing some of the best parts of being a follower of God. Remember, Jesus Christ is not only the Ultimate giver - He gave it all - but the Ultimate Gift! Let's follow His lead!
For King and Kingdom,
