Remember When?
How to strengthen your faith ... May 18, 2009
Greetings!

I had a great weekend preaching at Crossroads Christian Fellowship in Bakersfield this past week. It is always a privilege to share God's Word. The message I shared was somewhat inspired by a country song titled "Remember When". The song follows a couple through life as they reflect and remember their past and it brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. Our memory is a powerful thing.

The greatest commandment in the Bible is "to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, strength and mind." (Luke 10:27) How can we love God with our mind? Is reading scriptures the answer? Is thinking good thoughts the answer? Is meditating on God the answer? How can we love the Lord with all our mind?

Before Jesus was crucified He spent one last session with the disciples to teach them about the Holy Spirit and how the Spirit will help them follow hard after God. In John 14:26, Jesus taught that one of the roles of the Holy Spirit will be to teach and bring to remembrance the things Jesus taught. Thus, our mind is able to love God when it is led by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit will prompt and lead you to think upon the things God desires and will call to remembrance those things God wants to address or highlight.

Remember where you come from!

11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh-who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands- 12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

~ Ephesians 2:11-13 ~

Increase your Gratitude and Strengthen your Faith by Remembering what God has done!

Remember when you didn't love God and felt separated from His love? Do you remember what it felt like to be a stranger to God and the love and grace found in Jesus Christ? Do you remember having no hope and being without God in the world? I do and I am so thankful for Jesus!

Without God life is lame. It is just me and my own desires, thoughts and power to "make it happen". With God, it all changes. In my weakness, He is strong! With man many things are impossible but with God all things are possible! With God, it is no longer my way but His way. It is no longer my strength and ability but His. My hope is not in me or another human but in God alone! With God, life is truly blessed.

In Ephesians 2:11-13, Paul encouraged the church to remember what life was like without Jesus to keep them thankful for Jesus. You see, when we lose sight of the cross of Jesus we run the risk of becoming prideful in our Spirit. Soon, if not checked by remembering where we come from and what Jesus did for us, we go back to old ways and it is our strength not His, our thoughts not His, and our ways not His.

To defeat the tendency for pride stay humble and realize not "who you are" but "whose you are"! Remember where you come from and the cost that Jesus paid to get you where your going ... it will strengthen your faith and increase your gratitude.
