What to Expect This Week
A splash of sunshine from Twin Creek Nursery and Greenhouse (East Main St.) --Photo by Bill Lubing
Asparagus getting mighty thin If you're looking for asparagus this year in any quantity, this may be the last week to get it. The early start means an early end so that the plants have a chance to rest and regenerate for next year.
Raspberries and Shelled Peas Raspberries have made their appearance at this week's Wednesday market, which means we should see some on Saturday. The variety and quantity of peas continues to increase. The Green Barn Farm Market (East Mifflin St.) is able to offer shelled peas because of equipment that allows the peas to be shelled in the field.
Look for more greens, new potatoes, zucchini, turnips, beets, and of course, strawberries.

A Recipe from 'The Flavor of Wisconsin for Kids' a new book by Terese Allen and Bobbie Malone
Strawberry Mini Cheese Cake Cup
Recipe from The Flavor of Wisconsin for Kids.
A Local History Book ... with Recipes!A couple of years ago we announced the updated "The Flavor of Wisconsin," authored by Terese Allen and Harva Hachten. In that book the authors explore our state's foodways, from their origins to how they have changed over the years. They offer a selection of related recipes. | Terese Allen |
In this new book, "The Flavor of Wisconsin for Kids," Terese Allen teams up with author Bobbie Malone to draw on much of the material from the original book, recast in a way that makes it fun for kids to learn about our state's food history. Designed for kids and adults to use together, "The Flavor of Wisconsin for Kids" (ISBN: 978-0-87020-493-7; Wisconsin Historical Society Press) gives youngsters a real taste for hands-on history by showing them how to create foods that link us to Wisconsin's heritage and resources.Meet the Authors This Saturday and WednesdayWhile you're at the market this Saturday, you can visit with Terese and Bobbie at a book signing, taking place from 9:30am to 11:30 am at the Wisconsin Historical Museum, at 30 North Carroll St. (at State Street). There will be food samples at the event. Terese and Bobbie will also be participating in a kid-style book launch at the Madison Children's Museum on Wednesday, June 20 from 2:00pm to 5:00 pm. There will be cooking demos, samples, and more. The event is free with the price of admission to the museum. Now, on to the recipe!
