This Week ... This lettuce from Black Earth Valley Farm is great for wraps, salads, or sandwiches. (South Pinckney St.) --Photo by Bill Lubing Cut flowers, potted flowers. Some hanging, some in flats ready for your yard. Whatever your preference, at the Dane County Farmers' Market there is a vast selection of flowers for that special woman in your life. Not into flowers? No problem. How about a great piece of cheese, fresh produce, some fantastic meat, and a savory loaf of bread for that special meal that you're going to prepare? If your Mothers Day celebration has to do with great fresh, locally raised food, your best source is the Dane County Farmers' Market. Perhaps the best gift of all would be a couple hours strolling the market this Saturday, letting her decide what she'd like for that special day of the year. We're the first to admit, as fantastic as the offerings at the DCFM, they may not compare to a few hours in the presence of your charming company! See you at market. Bill Lubing [email protected]

What to Expect This Week
Tons of color to choose from at
(North Pinckney St.) --Photo by Bill Lubing
In general There are going to be far less morels this week than at the past market, yet more than they'll be next week. So, if you want some fresh morels ...
Rhubarb is coming on strong as is outdoor spinach and other greens. Green onions, lettuce, green garlic, and mustard greens are plentiful and there's a good supply of arugula (It's green too!).
If you're looking to plant an herb garden the DCFM is the place to shop. There are several vendors selling a huge variety of herbs. Hybrid and heirloom tomato plants are in good supply, including organic and conventional varieties.
As we've mentioned, plenty of flowers in all forms, including hanging baskets, potted, dried, and arranged.
In Particular
| Customer Tina Metcalfe loves pizza from Jordandal Farms. --Photo by Bill Lubing | The parade of tasty frozen products continues to swell from Carrie and Eric at Jordandal Farms. (West Main St.)
Three varieties of frozen pizza are now available, including Italian Sausage and Pepperoni with Red Sauce, Italian Sausage with Pesto, and Ham, Nitrite Free Bacon and Onion with Creme Fraiche.
We couldn't wrangle an invitation to a pizza party from market patron Tina Metcalfe (above) but Carrie was kind enough to provide us with a sample pizza "for evaluation." Our evaluation of the Ham, Bacon, and Creme Fraiche was quick, thorough, and delicious. As shown above, it baked to a beautiful, wonderfully golden sea of flavor.
This past June Chris and Lori Robson of Chris & Lori's Bakehouse (North Pinckney St.) raised over $4,000 with their first Market Dollar Food Drive. They converted all of that day's net proceeds to DCFM gift certificates. The total was enough that Market Manager Larry Johnson needed to print more certificates.
The couple donated the DCFM gift certificates to the Community Action Coalition (CAC), an organization that supplies food to numerous area food panties.
This year the couple will be holding their second Market Dollar Food Drive at the June 2 DCFM.
"Please help us reach our goal of donating $5000.00 of fresh, local food to Madison families facing hunger," they say.
They're confident that through the generosity of DCFM patrons they'll reach their new goal. Lori notes that last year a number of market patrons gave well above the price of the products purchased. Chris & Lori's Bakehouse is located at the Saturday market on North Pinckney St.
| Cabibbo's "Totally Almond" biscotti. --Submitted photo |
Joe and Ruby of Cabibbo's Bakery (East Main St.) invite you to stop at their booth this Saturday for a sample of their new biscotti.
Totally Almond goes great with coffee or a sweet wine. It contains no dairy products and is loaded with almonds.
This biscotti is slightly sweet as it's flavored with authentic Italian Disaronno Originale liqueur. Come and have a taste.
