'Small Business Saturday' every Saturday
Many folks are getting geared up to shop at their favorite small businesses on this coming Saturday. Dubbed "Small Business Saturday," the day is dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

At the Dane County Farmers' Market it's small business Saturday, at each Saturday market. Plus, it's one of the very few venues of any type in the country where the person selling the product is the one that produced the product.

By shopping at the DCFM not only are you supporting small businesses, you are supporting those entrepreneurs who bring their own product to market to sell face to face with the customer.

Plenty of Gifts Along With Food
Don't forget that during the Early Winter Market at Monona Terrace, many more non-food items are available than at the outdoor market. Ornaments, wreaths, decorated gourds and pine cones, candles, home made soap, and other great items are for sale alongside your favorite food items.

Remember that the Monona Terrace is just off the Capitol Square. Plan to spend a few hours in the area. Enjoy the market, then stroll around the Square and visit some of the interesting shops and restaurants, most of which are owner-operated small businesses.

See you at market!

Turkey Broccoli Soup

Turkey Broccoli Soup --Photo by Chef Luny

by Chef Luny

A great place for the leftover turkey. Most of the ingredients are available at the market. Substitute Alsum's Frozen Corn or turnips or rutabaga for the frozen green beans, if you desire.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups vegetable stock
  • 3 cups chicken stock
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon
  • 1 large turkey breast (cooked or diced)
  • 2 large onions (diced)
  • 4 small potatoes (diced)
  • 3 celery ribs (diced)
  • 2 cups broccoli
  • 1 red pepper
  • 2 cups frozen green beans (cut)

Directions
  1. Place all ingredients (minus the broccoli) in a large pot on medium high heat. Boil for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes or until potatoes are cooked.
  2. Add in the broccoli 3 minutes before serving. If you like mushy broccoli, add when you are ready to simmer for 10 minutes. The hot stock will cook the broccoli in 3 minutes.

Great Cheese from Brunkow. --Photo by Bill Lubing

Great Cheese!

From Brunkow Cheese

We strive to keep this list as accurate as possible. We probably  missed an item or two that is at the market or listed an item as available when it is not. Chances are that not all items mentioned or listed below will be at each market.

If you are looking for a specific vendor or product,

stop by the DCFM Information Booth
at the entrance to the market.
Friendly volunteers will be able to help you.

Going around the Capitol Square once or twice during the summer you've surely been attracted to the grilling cheese (not grilled cheese) being sampled by Brunkow Cheese. Located at the Martin Luther King Intersection of the Square, they draw huge crowds with the sampling.

Well, they're not allowed to fire up the grills at Monona Terrace. However, the cheese is the same. We haven't seen Brunkow at the Winter market recently but they're back for the Monona Terrace stint. And,  like all of the other cheesemakers at the market, they provide you with an opportunity to taste just about everything they offer for sale.

The deer hunting must be pretty good around Fountain Prairie Inn and Farms. We received an email from Dorothy Priske. She wishes everyone a happy Thanksgiving and notes that she and John will be taking a day off from the market this Saturday, so they won't be there.

Carrie Johnson from Jordandal Farms emailed this message to us:
"Tired of cooking?? We have pasties, soups, ground ham, roast beef slices, pulled pork, ham steaks...basically just heat and eat!

"We also have a new "nitrite free" bacon -- cured with celery powder! Or want to make soup?? Fresh and smoked pork hocks, soup bones, or chicken necks (great for stock) and feet [Chicken Feet Recipes]."

Lori
over at Grace Cheesecakes will be at market this week. She'd like to remind everyone, "Just wanted to let you know that we make English toffee. We have walnut and almond with dark chocolate. Last year we added peppermint with white chocolate and peppermint candies! Our newest creation is coffee toffee, taking EVP espresso blend beans to a new level by chopping them up and tossing them right into the toffee, slathering it with dark chocolate and sprinkling it with cocoa nibs.

"We also have mini cheesecakes that have a swirl of Badger red & white or Packers green and gold butter cream on top, packed and sold by the dozen."

Speaking of sweets, Jae Almond from the Gypsy Travelin' Market & Bakery brings her outstanding cookies to market. They go great with a cup of coffee. Also The Country Baker of Goose Gulch Farmstead is scheduled to be a market this week, bringing their potato buttermilk donuts and other delights.

Stella's Bakery brings their famous spicy cheese bread and also some great pastry, muffins, and Jamaican Christmas Cakes, the item that started them off at the Dane County Farmers' Market.

If you're looking for a treat that maybe isn't quite as sweet, check out The Nut Factory, featuring hickory and walnuts, or the popcorn at Krinke's market.

Along with sweets you'll also find fine savory breads at Cress Spring Bakery and Silly Yak Bakery. Silly Yak also offers gluten-free products.

There is a lot more at the market, just look below or above at the vendor roster.

Bring a Friend
Entertaining weekend guests? Family in for the holidays? Show them the amazing DCFM. With the holidays upon us, now is a great time to share the DCFM with friends.

Music This Week

This week enjoy the music of Onadare at the DCFM.

Onadare started 15 years ago by some neighbors and friends around Elmside Circle Park on the East Side of Madison, WI. The current band members include Janet Chen mandolin, Betty Chewning flute, Mike Duffy piano and bodhran, Lou Host-Jablonski fiddle and Scottish small pipes, Brian Mott accordion, Terry O'Laughlin guitar and octave mandolin, and Nancy Zucker fiddle.

Onadare primarily plays music from various Celtic traditions with a smattering of other folk music. They can be seen every third Tuesday at the Malt House, 2609 East Washington Ave. Here's a short video of them playing at the DCFM a couple of years ago.

See you Saturday!
