Dear DCFM Enthusiast,
First Outdoor Market This Saturday! The first Outdoor Dane County Farmers' Market of the year opens this Saturday on the Capitol Square, in Madison, WI. Here are a few important highlights: - The market runs from 6:00 am until 2:00 pm
- To locate a vendor or product don't hesitate to visit the Information Booth at the corner of North Carroll and West Mifflin, at the top of State St.
- EBT FoodShare is accepted. Please visit the Information Booth for DCFM vouchers.
- Sign up at the Information Booth to volunteer for the market or to receive this eNewsletter.
- No pets are allowed on the Square.
- Parking is available on the street and at numerous ramps convenient to the Square.
- The market is open rain or shine, every Saturday, year 'round.
- There are about 300 member vendors of the Dane County Farmers' Market. Typically 160-plus sell at a Saturday outdoor market.
The DCFM is the largest producer-only market in the country. The folks selling are the folks who produced it. All items are locally produced, from Wisconsin. While there are some great products for sale by vendors on the Square across the street from the Capitol Concourse, the actual Dane County Farmers' Market sells agricultural products only, with vendors set up adjacent to the sidewalk which directly encircles the Capitol lawn. Wednesday Market Begins April 20Don't forget that on Wednesdays, from April 20 through November 2, 2011 a smaller version of the DCFM is held from 8:30 am until 2:00 pm in the 200 Block of Martin Luther King Blvd., in Madison, WI. A subset of the same great vendors found on Saturday, from 30 to 42 vendors participate at any Wednesday market. Don't forget to grab an extra canvas bag or two. We'll see you at market! Recipe: Spring Salad with Tarragon Vinaigrette

Spring Salad with Tarragon Vinaigrette --Photo by IngridNL
This is a terrific salad, utilizing what is just coming or soon to come to the market. To keep it local and fresh, substitute smoked trout from Artesian Trout Farm (Located on North Carroll St.) for the sardines and one of the many excellent vinaigrettes from Renaissance Farm (Located on North Carroll St.) for the vinegar, olive oil, mustard, and tarragon. If you're going to stay with the vinegar, check out some of the varieties available from Nord Haus Gartens and Crafts (Located on East Mifflin St.). Numerous vendors sell mixed salad greens. Spring Salad with Tarragon Vinaigrette
By IngridNL Ingredients- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon whole grain mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- 1 garlic clove, crushed
- 1/2 bunch asparagus
- 2 large hard-boiled eggs
- 1 (5 ounce) bag mixed salad greens
- 20 cherry tomatoes
- 1 (4 ounce) can sardines, drained
- 12 olives
Directions - Whisk vinegar, oil, mustard, tarragon, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Add garlic and set aside.
- Cook asparagus until tender crisp. This depends on the size of the asparagus. If you are using thin asparagus this should only take about 3 minutes.
- Slice eggs.
- Divide salad greens between 2 plates.
- Top with eggs, asparagus, tomatoes, sardines and olives.
- Remove the garlic from the dressing and drizzle over the salads.

Hand Crafted Delight... ... If you are unfamiliar with chutney, Sylvan Meadows Farm has starting making them to bring to the market. Not as sweet as a jelly, chunkier than a jam, a chutney balances sweet, vinegar, savory, and sometimes hot to accompany meats, vegetables, or good old peanut butter on a hearty crust of bread. We strive to keep this list as accurate as possible. We probably missed an item or two that is at the market or listed an item as available when it is not. Chances are not all items mentioned or listed below will be at each market. Due to inclement weather, product availability, and other factors, some vendors listed below may need to cancel participation in this week's market. Word is there will be ramps, watercress, spinach, salad greens, and early cucumbers at this week's market. The first of the hothouse tomatoes are in, along with overwintered parsnips, onions, carrots, and potatoes, Spring asparagus? Maybe next week. If you're eager to check out the first of the transplants, find a hanging basket, or populate a window box herb garden there should be plenty to choose from at the market. Meats, cheeses, and bakery will be plentiful at the market, with a great variety to choose from. To find a vendor or product you can: 1) check the DCFM website or take a leisurely stroll through the market. If you'd like to check with your favorite vendor about product availability, go here, then do a search for contact information. And remember, you can always inquire at the Information Booth, at the corner of North Carroll and West Mifflin streets at the top of State St. Bakery Biscotti Cheese bread Cheesecake Cinnamon rolls Cookies Cupcakes Flat breads 'Mpanata Muffins Panettone Pastries Ragusa Style Semolina Bread Scaccia Scones Sweet breads Tea breads Torts Tortillas Whole wheat sourdough
