Dear DCFM Enthusiast,

DCFM Vendors Appreciate
Support from Loyal Customers

While record numbers of folks have been attending the rallies on the Capitol Square,  the same can't be said for attendance at this winter session of the DCFM.

Maybe it's the weather. Maybe it's fear over a perceived lack of parking. Maybe folks are heading up to the Capitol Square bright and early (really early) in the morning and staying all day.

One DCFM vendor wrote us, wondering where his regular customers might be hanging out on Saturday morning. He's not seeing them at the market.

He says, "Surprisingly, all of our customers' concerns about market can still be met. Those that are attending the rallies can get to market early, get a good parking space in the ramp, come in, and buy some great local food. They have plenty of time to enjoy a filling, nutritious breakfast, take their purchases back to their car, (still cool out), and have lots of time to get in on the rally.

"Those that are concerned about traffic etc, can come early and get out before the traffic even starts. It isn't overly busy until 11:00 am or later.  When you leave, it's not busy going out at all. All you do is turn west out of the ramp and you're out of the traffic."

I think what he's really saying is, "We miss you. We appreciate your support.  Don't be a stranger."

'Taste of the Market' Breakfast Features
Culinary Skills of DCFM Vendors,
and FH King Group

Beauty Heart Radishes. --Photo by Bill Lubing

Delicious beauty heart radishes are just part of the tasty DCFM-sourced

ingredients to be found at this week's breakfast.

Our farmers, community, and FH King group will be the guests in the kitchen for the March 19 "Taste of the Market" breakfast.

The breakfast runs from from 8:30 am to 11 am, unless the food runs out first, at the site of the Winter DCFM, the Madison Senior Center, 330 West Mifflin Street. The cost is $7.50 or $3.75 for kids and those who can't eat an adult portion

The menu includes:

  • Mini pancakes topped off with sour cherries and yogurt, drizzled with maple syrup;
  • Egg scrambler with carrots, spinach, herbs. and cheese;
  • Bacon and emu cranberry brat sausage staged in pears and apples;  and,
  • A taste of Grace's Cheesecakes rhubarb bar.
  • Vegetarian option: mushrooms in place of the meat.
  • Beverages: organic fair trade coffee using the Friends of the Dane County Farmers' Market blend or tea; and cranberry juice.  Milk is available upon request.

Additional seating can be found on the second floor, accessed via stairway and elevator found to the right upon entering the Senior Center. There are also additional vendors found through the double doors found inside the center towards the front.

While we try to serve the menu that is listed in our promotion, and this is most often the case, parts of this menu may be substituted or changed.

DCFM Suppliers for this week's breakfast include:

Driftless Organics - Carrots

Valley View Emus - Cranberry Emu Sausage

JenEhr Farm - Beauty Heart Radishes

Enjoy fresh mushrooms from the DCFM along with the excellent garlic offered by several vendors. For oil we suggest the sunflower variety found at the market.

We strive to keep this list as accurate as possible. We probably  missed an item or two that is at the market or listed an item as available when it is not. Chances are not all items mentioned or listed below will be at each market. The vendor list below was accurate as of February 23, 2011.

Due to inclement weather, product availability, and other factors, some vendors listed below may need to cancel participation in this week's market.

If you're looking for some decorated cookies a great place to start would be with Jae Almond at  Gypsy Travelin' Market & Bakery. Speaking of sweet, there's plenty that is sweet from Stella's Bakery, along with their hot and spicy cheese bread. Jamie's & Son offers wonderful baklava while Sutter's Ridge Farm offers some wonderful baked goods. Of course there's boxes of sweet at Grace Cheesecakes and both sweet and savory at Cress Spring Bakery and Silly Yak Bakery.

Cabibbo's Bakery introduced a new item last week: Asiago Black Pepper Bread. It looks delicious.

If you're looking for a great roast, sausage, or steak, check out Daval's Bison Meats, Jordandal Farms, Pecatonica Valley Farm, Cherokee Bison Farms, Sylvan Meadows Farm, and Fountain Prarie Inn and Farms. Many of these folks sell chicken as well as does Blue Valley Gardens, JenEhr Family Farm. For emu, visit Betty Lou at Valley View Emus and for trout and salmon visit Jenny at Artesian Trout Farm.

This Week's Music: Old Gray Cats

The Old Gray Cats is an ensemble of fiddle (Linda Millunzi-Jones), guitar (Greg Jones), banjo (Joe McNally) and stand-up bass (Willi Van Haren).

The group plays old-time dance band music that you might have heard at barn dances or square dances, with a little singing thrown in for fun! Most of the group's members have been playing together for decades.

Come tap your feet or waltz with your breakfast and they'll play some cheerful tunes for you
!

It's getting to be that time

A number of DCFM vendors offer transplants and other items we need to get our gardens going in the spring. Now is a good time to start getting familiar with what will be coming from specific vendors. Many of them offer specialty items that are difficult to find elsewhere.

Next Week Visit the
Friends Cook Book Sale

Just one more week until the Friends of the DCEM Cookbook Sale. In its third year, the March 26 sale will be held upstairs at the Senior Center during market hours, from 8:00 am until Noon.

There are always many excellent cookbooks that explore a multitude of cuisines. Come early for the best selection. For more information contact Kathy at [email protected]

Until next week ...

Sincerely
