Recipe: Mini Quiche
| |
Mini Quiche. --Photo by JustJanS
With the Oscars coming up this Sunday evening many folks will have a house full of guests ... or will maybe be spending a quiet night with the partner cozying up to the television in snuggies with finger food within easy reach. In either case this mini quiche recipe provides some great eats. Feel free to substitute or add ham, celariac, carrots, or turnips to the bacon. Mini Quiche
by JustJanS Ingredients- 1 package pie dough or pastry sheets (or make your own)
- 6 slices bacon, diced
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 6 eggs
- 1 cup cream
- 1 cup grated cheese
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (I used dried)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Homemade Crust Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 canola oil, or sunflower oil
- 1/4 cup ice water (I use refrigerated water)
Crust Directions- Mix flour and salt with fork.
- Beat oil and water with whisk or fork to thicken.
- Pour into flour and mix with fork.
- Press into 9 inch pie crust.
- 5 Fill with quiche mixture and bake at 400F until done.
- You can double the recipe, divide dough in half, and roll out into a pair of rounds for two-crust pies.
- This recipe is not suitable for baked pie crust shells.
- It makes a nice, flaky crust that's suitable for everyday use.
Quiche Directions - Cook the onion and bacon over a low heat until the onion is softened.
- Allow to cool a little.
- Mix together with the eggs, cream, cheese, parsley and salt and pepper.
- Roll out pastry dough
- Using a cookie cutter or glass, cut 12 circles from each pastry sheet.
- Use these to line a mini muffin pan.
- Place about 2 teaspoons of the egg and bacon mix in each pastry base.
- Bake in a moderate oven for about 12 minutes per tray (or until puffed, golden and set).
- Repeat with remaining pastry sheets and mix.

At Market This Week

Some Real Beauties... ... from JenEhr Family Farm. These beauty heart radishes go very well in a fresh salad [RECIPES]. --Photo by Bill Lubing
We strive to keep this list as accurate as possible. We probably missed an item or two that is at the market or listed an item as available when it is not. Chances are not all items mentioned or listed below will be at each market. The vendor list below was accurate as of February 23, 2011. Due to inclement weather, product availability, and other factors, some vendors listed below may need to cancel participation in this week's market. Cabibbo's Bakery returns this week, providing bakery with an Italian twist. Also scheduled at market this week are Marsden Pure Honey and McCluskey Brothers Farm. The McCluskeys have been busy working their sugar maple trees. For some great "quick" ideas for that big Oscar night party, try summer sausage and the like from Cherokee Bison Farms, Daval's Bison Meat, Fountain Prairie Inn and Farms, Marr Family Farm, Pecatonica Valley Farm, and Valley View Emus. Check out the great root vegetables from Black Earth Valley Farm, Blue Valley Gardens, Don's Produce, Driftless Organics, JenEhr Family Farm, Sutter's Ridge y Farm, and Young Earth Farm. We have two flower and/or plant vendors this week: Indian Trail Greenhouses and Lewiston Perennial Farm. Cheese vendors include Bleu Mont Dairy, Capri Cheesery, Hook's Cheese Company, and McCluskey Brothers Farm.
To find a vendor or product you can: 1) check the DCFM website or take a leisurely stroll through the market. If you'd like to check with your favorite vendor about product availability, go here, then do a search for contact information.

This Week's Music: Boo Bradley
| |
Boo Bradley is a hot blues stompin', jelly roll jumpin', rag jazz infusin', three-piece acoustic jug attack from our beloved mad town. They play a variety of old southern music including delta blues, ragtime, jug band, country, and Cajun. These boys throw down a porch stomp boogie chock full of old time Delta moans and the homemade shake and rattle of washboard rhythms. You may know them as "those guys" who play the summer market. Now you can satisfy your Boo Bradley fix in the wintertime as well. Come see Scott "Boo" Kiker on guitar, Bradley Selz on washboard and drums and the Reverend C. Scott Fry "bring it on home" this Saturday. In the meantime, check out their new website, www.boobradley.com. There are a couple of free music downloads on there.

Looking Ahead ... | |

Great for Breakfast ... ... Try making your favorite style breakfast potato dish using sweet potatoes from Don's Produce. They're delicious and good for you! --Photo by Bill Lubing
Yes, There's Plenty of Parking If you're concerned about a lack of parking downtown during the DCFM you shouldn't be. There is plenty of parking available during the market at the municipal ramp adjoining the Senior Center and with metered street parking. To be doubly sure of finding a parking space come to the market a little earlier than usual. Friends Still Looking for Your Used Cookbook Donations Friends of the Dane County Farmers' Market Annual Cookbook Re-sale will be held on Saturday, March 26, from 8:00 am until Noon, at the Madison Senior Center. You make this sale possible by donating your extra cookbooks for the re-sale. Cookbook donations may be dropped at the winter market on any Saturday morning. Please deliver them in boxes or handle bags for easy handling. If you have a number of books and need them be picked up, contact Kathy Sandefur at ksandefur1@charter.net or 608-274-7268. Please, take a moment and look through your cookbook collection. All proceeds from the cookbook sale fund the School on the Square and the EBT Foodshare program. If you love cookbooks, you might enjoy being part of the volunteer set-up team on Friday afternoon, March 25. The fun begins at 2:00 pm at the Senior Center. Or help on sale day assisting customers. Shifts are flexible. Give call Kathy at 608-274-7268 or email at ksandefur1@charter.net. Until next week ... Sincerely Bill Lubing DCFM bill@dcfm.org
