Dear DCFM Enthusiast,

Special "Taste of the Market" breakfast
Features Tory Miller and Company Chefing for
Friends of the DCFM Fundraiser.

The January 29th "Taste of the Market" breakfast - a special fundraiser for Friends of the Dane County Farmers' Market - will be managed by Tory Miller, Executive Chef and Co-owner of L'Etoile and Graze restaurants along with staff, family and friends. Special volunteer groups helping will include the UW Dietetics and Nutrition Students, Slow Food UW students, as well as many Friends of the DCFM volunteers and DCFM farmers.

The "Taste of the Market" breakfast continues at 8:30 am this Saturday and is served until 11:00 am unless the food runs out first. The cost for this week only is $14.00 for adults and $7.00 for children or those who can't eat an adult portion.

A special note:
Funds for this breakfast will go to help support the Friends FoodShare Program which has allowed Quest card recipients the opportunity to buy fresh products at the farmers' market. This year Quest participants spent over $40,000 during the market season. The need is great to continue this very important program which allows our fellow customers under hard times to purchase fresh products from our farmers. Dollars from this fundraiser will also fund the food-related educational program, "School On the Square."

Additional seating can be found on the second floor, accessed via stairway and elevator found to the right upon entering the Senior Center. There are also additional vendors found through the double doors found inside the center towards the front.

The menu includes:
  • Chicken fried steak with country gravy - finished with frost sweetened braised spinach,
  • Chef's choice eggs,
  • Sour cherry pancakes with maple syrup,
  • Roasted herbed rainbow potatoes, and
  • Graze Restaurant famous croissants.
  • Vegetarian option will be chicken fried Shiitake mushrooms.
  • Beverages: organic fair trade coffee using the Friends of the Dane County Farmers' Market blend or tea; and Ela Orchard apple cider (last of the season) or cranberry juice. Milk is available upon request.
While we try to serve the menu that is listed in our promotion, and this is most often the case, parts of this menu may be substituted or changed.

DCFM Suppliers for this week's breakfast include:

Cherries - Door County Fruit Orchard
Maple Syrup - McCluskey Brothers Farm
Steak - Fountain Prairie Farm
Potatoes - Butter Mountain Farm
Spinach - Snug Haven Farm
Eggs - Pecatonica Valley Farm
Garlic and Eggs - Brantmeier Family Farm
Mushrooms - Blue Valley Gardens
Apple Cider - Ela Orchard - the LAST of the season
Honey - Marsden's Pure Honey

Volunteers for the "Taste of the Market" breakfast are always welcomed. If you're interested please contact DCFM Volunteer Coordinator Ruth Miller at ferngulley@mhtc.net.

Potato Soup

by msouth

Ingredients
6 -8 medium potatoes
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup flour
6 cups milk
2 teaspoons chicken bouillon (Optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 pound cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. Peel, cube, boil, drain and "mush" potatoes to the consistency you like (I like them lumpy, but my kids like smaller pieces).
  2. In separate pan, melt butter, add flour, and cook while stirring for about a minute or so.
  3. Add half the milk and stir until lumps are out of flour mixture.
  4. Add remaining milk and on medium-high heat, heat to a boil.
  5. Stir almost constantly or it will scorch.
  6. After boiling, turn heat off and add remaining ingredients.

We strive to keep this list a acurate as possible. We probably  missed an item or two that is at the market or listed an item as available when it is not. Chances are not all items mentioned or listed below will be at each market. The vendor list below was accurate as of January 5, 2011.

Due to inclement weather, product availability, and other factors, some vendors listed below may need to cancel participation in this week's market.

vendors

Meats are one farmers' market category that continues strong throughout the year. This Saturday we are expecting around eight producers who are bringing meat that includes beef, bison, chicken, emu, fish, lamb, and pork.

There are plenty of vegetables available, from frost sweetened spinach to fresh mushrooms and mixed greens. Because of greenhouses and hoop houses it's possible to enjoy "just picked" (as in yesterday) greens to enjoy in a salad or saute. And don't forget the onions and garlic!

If you're interested in making our Potato Soup recipe this week there are several vendors at the market that carry a great selection of potato varieties.

Finished canned and frozen products that include tomato juice, soups, jams, pickles, entrees, and salsas can be found from several vendors. These "value added" items are made in small batches from the farmers' own crops so you know they will be excellent.

And don't forget the cheese. From complex blues to subtle goudas, there is a wonderful variety of cheeses at the DCFM made from cow, sheep, and goat milk (and sometimes made from two or more types of milk).

Now is a good time to start thinking about plants for the house. Indian Trail Greenhouses is scheduled to attend market this week and will have a good supply from which to choose.

 Great Things in Small Packages

It's easy to overlook the smaller room at the front of the Senior Center. When you turn left after entering the Center the entrance is past the interior windows.

There are several more vendors who occupy this room, selling meats, vegetables, and bakery. So when you're making your rounds of the market, don't forget to check it out. There is also another exit out the front of the building located in this room, which makes it convenient when the main entrance is congested with breakfast traffic.

This Week's Music:
Doug Brown with Tom Waselchuk

Doug Brown and Tom Waselchuk share a love of guitar music of many kinds with us this Saturday, featuring genres ranging from jazz to country, bluegrass, and pop. Both have had long tenures with Madison's Gypsy Swing band Harmonious Wail. Tom leads the lauded classic country group The Dang-it's.

Doug performs with jazz singer Michelle DuVall, boogie/folk impresario Amos Moses, and the middle-eastern dance band Salaam-Shalom. Expect an eclectic, energetic extravaganza of guitar playing, perhaps spiced with a bit of fiddle and banjo!

Raffle Drawing This Saturday
This Saturday will be your last chance to buy your tickets for the Friends raffle. It offers over 50 chances to win. The drawing takes place this Saturday at 12:00 noon.

Until next week ...

Sincerely

Bill Lubing
