Summer 2009
Celebrating Masterpieces

lunchsavethedateThe stage is being set for AWEE's well-known and well-loved Faces of Success Luncheon - its 15th year of celebrating individuals who have transformed their lives.  AWEE's volunteer planning committee, led by co-chairs Phyllis Dumond and Ginger Clayton, is working diligently to recruit sponsors, secure gifts for the give-a-ways, plan the décor for the "Masterpiece in the Making" and so much more. This year's event, November 10 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, will once again bring to life the challenges women, men and young adults face as they strive to get back on their feet and remake their lives as contributing and thriving members of the community.

You can play a key role in this year's luncheon!

AWEE Participants STEP Up
to Help Others

Step Mentoring Group In the middle of transforming their own lives, the people who AWEE serves become impassioned supporters of giving back to the community.

The participants of AWEE's "Successful Transition and Empowerment Project" (STEP), program have been sponsoring events and mentoring opportunities to ease the transition for ex-offenders as they return to their communities.
After receiving help in reuniting with family and feeling more at ease being back in their community, the people who benefited started telling AWEE they wanted to express their appreciation by turning around and doing something nice for others. So in May, we launched a new ongoing series of STEP service projects.

Youth Programs Growing Strong

Youth program NicoleArizona's economic future will largely be determined by the degree to which our next generation of workers have the skills and education they need to compete in the global marketplace. That's why we're placing such a strong emphasis on launching programs for young people aged 14-21.

Can We Be Friends?

We're excited to announce that AWEE has dipped its toe into the "social marketing" waters with the formal launch of our Facebook page this month, a LinkedIn profile, daily Tweets and this blog!

There are a number of ways you can stay connected with Arizona's premier workforce development organization through our employment topic news, participant features, and of course, the latest scoop on fun events.

AWEE Exec Featured Panelist at International Conference

Nonprofit organizations like AWEE have many stakeholders, ranging from board members to local community organizations. When all is said and done, however, the measure of our true success is the degree to which we produce meaningful and measurable improvements in the lives of our program participants. So it was natural for AWEE's President & CEO, Marie Sullivan, to be tapped as a panelist by the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) when it held its annual Performance Improvement Conference April 19-22 in Orlando, Florida.

No Organization Is an Island

IslandJohn Donne famously wrote that "No man is an island," a statement which applies equally to AWEE. Realizing that no organization can go it alone, we've built a network of partners that share our mission and goals. Of course, the word "partner" covers a myriad of relationships and spans a broad array of organizations. So, we'd like to take this opportunity to spotlight some of our most valuable partners and describe how they benefit our program participants.

Plus-Size Work Attire Needed!

Like our program participants, success comes in all shapes and sizes. We are in urgent need of gently used "plus-size" business attire suitable for our female and male program participants to wear on the job and during interviews. For women, we're looking for clothes starting at size 18. For men, trousers starting at size 46 and comparably sized shirts and jackets are needed.

Please bring your clothing donations to AWEE's Central Phoenix office at 640 N. 1st Avenue anytime between 8:30am and 4:30pm. For more information, please call 602.223.4333 or visit awee.org.

Face of Success:
Ramon Frausto

Ramon was working as a bank teller when his mom passed away, precipitating a severe depression that he tried to self-medicate with alcohol and cocaine. Despite his strong family values and problem-free history, Ramon soon drifted into an unhealthy environment of drug abuse
and crime.

"The first time I was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle, I was incarcerated for 15 days and then released on my own recognizance. The next time I was caught, I was sentenced to a term of three-and-a-half
years at the prison in Florence. This was
a real wake-up call," he said.
