Sons of Italy to Honor
"Toughest Sheriff in America"
Washington, DC--
September 27, 2007
The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the nation's
oldest and largest organization for people of Italian
descent, will honor Joe Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa
County in Phoenix, AZ. A special luncheon will take
place during OSIA's executive session to be held in
Scottsdale December 6-9.
Known as "America's toughest sheriff," Joe Arpaio
heads the nation's third largest sheriff's office, which
employs over 3,800 people. He has held this post
since his first election in 1992. Before that he was a
federal narcotics agent and a police officer in
Washington, D.C. and Las Vegas.
"We are proud to recognize an Italian American taking
a strong stand in law enforcement," said National
President Alfred A. Affinito.
A tough but creative law enforcer, Sheriff Arpaio's
innovative programs include the only accredited high
school in a U.S. jail. In 2003, the Grand Lodge of
Arizona honored his unswerving adherence to
upholding the law and its positive effects on crime in
his jurisdiction.
The luncheon will take place on Saturday, December
8 at 12:30 pm at The Hyatt Regency Hotel -
Scottsdale, AZ. Tickets are $60, please contact the
OSIA National office 202/547-2900 or
