STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY
WIN MORE THAN $100,000 IN
PRESTIGIOUS SONS OF ITALY SCHOLARSHIPS

Washington, DC-- May 2, 2006 More than $100,000 in scholarships to colleges and universities in the U.S. and Italy will be awarded to 13 young Italian Americans by the Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) this year during the 18th annual National Education & Leadership Awards (NELA) gala in Washington, DC on May 25. Thirteen young Italian Americans—eight of them (65%) young women—will be recognized.

These gifted Italian American student scholars and community leaders will attend such leading colleges and universities as Yale and Princeton, the University of Oxford and the University of Pennsylvania. Three winners will study in Italy.

The SIF annual gala also will honor three successful Italian Americans who are active in philanthropy. Past NELA honorees include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, AIDS researcher Anthony Fauci, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and such legendary entertainers as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Annette Funicello. They are among the considerable number of Italian American men and women in government, business, law, science, industry, education, the arts and sports who have enriched America.

The SIF is the philanthropic arm of the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the nation’s oldest and largest national organization for people of Italian heritage. Over the years, the SIF has contributed more than $93 million to medical research, disaster relief and scholarships. The NELA Gala proceeds help fund these philanthropic programs.
