Friday eNews from the Cape Cod Chamber

January 27, 2012

From the CEO's Desk:

  • The Chamber is pleased to once again sponsor the annual Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year Award, presented to a woman who has demonstrated leadership in the Cape Cod community and has made a significant contribution to the arts, education, business or community involvement embracing the ideas of patriotism.   Nominees may be submitted online at www.barnstablecounty.org.
  • At Secretary Bialecki's invitation, we attended the State of the Commonwealth address by Governor Patrick on Monday night.  Appropriately, we were seated beneath the sacred cod that hangs in the House chambers! (See photo at right).
  • The Governor's Budget recommendations were released this week, and we attended a budget process meeting led by Senate President Therese Murray.Once again, tourism advocates will be needed to make the case for regional marketing dollars.  Tourism Arts & Culture co-chair Sarah Peake has been very supportive of tourism line items, and we have been discussing next year's budget and other issues such as visitor center operations with her.
  • The SmarterCape Summit planning committee has begun to organize a very invigorating two-day event for May 14 & 15 at Sea Crest Beach Hotel.  Details will begin to be available soon, but save the date!
  • The Public Policy Pillar directors met this week to discuss Barnstable County Government Review and statewide zoning reform.
  • The Barnstable County Government Review Commission is recommending a wide range of actions, and the commission will be voting on these recommendations before the final report is submitted to the county commissioners.  Included are ideas such as rolling the regional transit authority and the workforce investment board into the "new" county government
  • It is hard to start a business. It can be harder to keep it running well and growing. In order to help budding and well entrenched entrepreneurs, we are launching monthly advice articles, which will be posted at the Chamber's Linked-In group for entrepreneurs. Compiled by Clare O'Connor and Peter Karlson, this month's article is "Doing More with Less."  These monthly postings by guest writers will generate comments that will give illustration to the topic!
