Yoga has experienced a rapid growth in popularity in the West with over 6% of the population practicing yoga. Unfortunately, yoga is predominantly practiced by a privileged minority in our society, primarily those that are affluent, well-educated, white and female. In order to reach and serve the entire population with the benefits of yoga, we must strive for the formal inclusion of yoga into our school and healthcare institutions. This effort will require a significant scientific evidence base that will have to be provided by organized, formal, biomedical/psychosocial research on yoga. This workshop will present an overview of the history and breadth of yoga research and the individual scientists and yoga research institutions both in the West and in India. We will review some of the basic science underlying the
psychophysiology of yoga practices and the recent contributions in brain imaging research. We will also overview the significant research on the benefits of yoga as a therapeutic intervention for psychological conditions and for a wide variety of medical disorders. Special attention will be given to an overview of scientific research done on Kundalini Yoga. We will review the value and implications of this research, especially for teachers who may find this information useful in promoting and marketing their classes, communicating the benefits to their students, and in convincing administrators in schools, fitness centers, healthcare centers and other institutions to incorporate yoga classes into their facilities.

Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, Ph.D. is a neuroscientist with a 40-year Kundalini Yoga lifestyle practice. He is Director of Research for the Kundalini Research Institute and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He researches the efficacy of yoga for stress, insomnia, PTSD, anxiety, and public schools.
