New Job Growth
Statistics Canada announced that 58,200 net new jobs were created across the country in April, with large gains in the private sector, particularly in manufacturing, with most being full-time positions.
April's strong job growth and the over 750,000 net new jobs created in Canada since July 2009 (90% full-time jobs and over 80% private sector) are both positive signs that Canada's economy is seeing more positive growth.
Independent international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development are forecasting Canada to lead the G-7 in economic growth in the years ahead.
Canada's net debt-to-GDP ratio remains the lowest in the G-7. We recognize that the global economy is still fragile as seen by serious challenges in other countries, but for now let's celebrate this positive news. | |

Victims' Rights |
Last week the Federal Government announced increased offender accountability measures to ensure more responsibility for their detention. All too often, victims tell us they feel criminals have all the rights.
Five new measures announced relating to increasing offender accountability, include: Increases to the amount inmates are charged for their room and board; Eliminating 'incentive' pay for inmates working in corrections facilities; Streamlining and standardizing the purchase of inmate goods from outside suppliers; Transferring accountability for all institutional canteens to Inmate Committees; and ensuring administrative costs associated with managing the inmate telephone system are charged to the inmate population. If they use it - they pay for it.

Beware of Fraud
Occasionally, taxpayers
may receive either by
telephone, mail or email a
communication that claims to be from the
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) but is
NOT. In all these cases,
the communication
requests personal
information such as a
credit card, bank account, passport
and social insurance
numbers from the
taxpayer.
These fraudulent
communications are also
referred to as scams or
phishing. Invariably, the
communication argues
that this personal
information is needed so
that the taxpayer can
receive a refund or benefit payment. Another
common scam refers the
person to a web site
resembling the CRA's
web site where the
person is asked to verify
their identity by entering
personal information.
Taxpayers should not
respond to such
fraudulent
communications. To
better equip taxpayers to
identify those
communications that do
not come from the CRA,
the following general
guidelines are provided.
The CRA does not do the
following:
- The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email.
- The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.
- The CRA will not leave any personal information on an answering machine.
