 Prostitution Laws
Struck Down

The Ontario Court of Appeal struck down the ban on brothels, permitting sex trade workers to hire staff such as bodyguards and suggested amending the Criminal code to restrict the ban on "living off the avails of prostitution" only to "pimps".

However, the decision continues to uphold the ban on public solicitation for the purpose of selling sex. The ban on brothels will be stayed for a year.

The ban on "living off the avails of prostitution" will be restricted in 30 days.

The federal government has 60 days to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. The Government maintains that prostitution is bad for society and harmful to women, communities and vulnerable persons.

Laws are needed to control prostitution and its effects on society.

The Government is reviewing this decision to determine its legal options.

Free Tax Clinics

The Canada Revenue Agency is pleased to sponsor a number of free tax clinics across the country every spring. The objective of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)is to help eligible individuals who are not able to prepare their income tax and benefit returns by themselves. It is intended to ensure that all taxpayers have equal access to the tax system.

The CVITP is a partnership between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and community organizations which host tax preparation clinics and arrange for volunteers to prepare tax returns for eligible individuals.

The CRA provides training, tax software, and a network of CVITP coordinators across the country to help community organizations and volunteers deliver the program.

The CVITP is a source of pride for the CRA. Each year together with many volunteers and community organizations, we help over half a million Canadians file their tax returns. For more information about clinics in and around Surrey please click here.
