Debater Recovers from House FireHouse Fire
Over the winter break, sophomore Amanda Ramirez awoke in the middle of the night just in time to escape a fire that began in the apartment below hers. Amanda was able to get out with her puppy and her laptop, but that was it. The Fire Department deemed the building uninhabitable and the damage to Amanda's belongings was complete. Luckily, a room opened up in another debater's rental house, but Amanda is still accounting for all of the belongings she lost in the fire. Dinner with Dressler
The team after dinner hosted by Don Dressler '66

This month, we were in southern California for the University of Southern California and Cal State Fullerton Debate Tournaments. We got to catch up with two alumni on this great trip.

Don Dressler '66 hosted the team for dinner and came out to Fullerton to watch Amanda Ramirez and Michael Mays defeat Cornell University in a debate about democracy assistance to Syria. Don is a great supporter for K-State Debate and we enjoy hearing his stories of his legal practice and consulting firm.

We were joined by Tristan Tafolla '08 who is in Los Angeles working in the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security.

Check out our tournament schedule and if you would like to visit with the team or watch some debates, we would love for you to come out and show us your support for Kansas State Debate.

Competitive Success
football
The team being honored on the football field Saturday Sept. 17th
Fall 2011 was awesome, we traveled 22 debaters and everyone had their own victories. Blake Hallinan and Derek Ziegler started the season off right at Gonzaga with a semifinals appearance. The next weekend, the team was recognized on the football field. In October, Derek was the top speaker at Emporia where he and Blake were semifinalists. Two major victories last fall included the novice team (no high school experience) of Alisha Bolz and Amy Brandt's tournament victory at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Tournament and not to be outdone, sophomore Amanda Ramirez and first year, Michael Mays closed out the semester by winning the UMKC Tournament.

Marian Skaggs with her CEDA National Championship T-Shirt
Kedzie 007 is the Debate Center on campus. Every once in a while we get a visit from alums who have fantastic stories. Imagine our surprise when Marian Foote (Skaggs) walked into the debate center in October looking for a trophy she won in 1947. She hadn't been back on campus in decades, but stopped by to visit with us. She told us of a fantastic story of being recruited by her public speaking instructor to join the debate team so another woman would not be the only woman traveling with a mostly make debate team. Marian took the opportunity to join the team and soon found herself driving with the team to Corpus Christi Texas. A long drive today, one can only imagine the drive in the 40's before I-35! 13 Schools were in competition with only 5 women entered in the tournament (3 of which were from Kansas State). When the three day tournament was over, Marian and her partner who had no prior debate experienced emerged as the champions. The news clippings Marian sent us indicated these two women representing Kansas State university only debated men over the course of the 3 day tournament. We want to thank Marian for stopping by and telling her story with the team so they can be proud of the tradition of Kansas State Debate. We sure wish we still had that trophy from 1947 for you Marian!

If you have a story about your time on the debate team that you'd like to share, or a photo of a debate trip please send it to us and we'll feature it here in the newsletter.
