Fall  2012

Hola friends and friendly strangers!

Welcome to the Fall issue of Florida Time Forgot, an extension of Fossil Expeditions and an on-going collection of my quirky photo stories and Marisa's great art and funky illustrations.

Our aim is to make ourselves think.  Once we've thunk, we want to pass our thoughts on to you so we get a bunch of folks thinking and thunking.  But it's not just the analytical part of the brain we hope to stimulate.  Somewhere deep in our skull is the nucleus accumbens, or what I like to call our "Wow!" center.  It's a small room where we sense pleasure and laughter.  There are no locks on this facility and you can come and go as you please. But be warned that too much of a good thing is also dangerous.  In the same room can be found addiction, aggression and fear.  One should never enter this place without the company of a close friend known as moderation.

Do you remember the old saying by George Bernard Shaw (and paraphrased later by two of the Kennedys)?  "You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, 'Why not?" There is a dreamer in each of us and it manifests itself in different times and different places.  Who hasn't dreamed of a sensible world in which humans are kind to each other and gentle to their environment?  Who hasn't dreamed of good health?  Or knowledge?  Or riches -- although for some of us, it's riches of the heart that make us feel the wealthiest.

Our newsletters reflect the dreams that pop up while we are hiking, kayaking or wading waist deep in a river searching for fossil mammoths and sharks, or while sipping a Corona lite on a quiet evening.  They challenge me to capture them in my camera and they motivate Marisa to grab her pencil for a quick sketch.  Sometimes the dreams are behind the things we see and we try to flush them out later -- me in Photoshop Elements and her with paint, charcoal or her kiln.  When finished, our scenes isolate that reality or transform it into a colorful fantasy.

We are most alive during those moments and that's when we feel the most creative.

We hope your visit is a fun and educational one!

Bestus,
