Owen's Random Ramblings

Owen's Random Ramblings...

The ultimate development of piston engine radial aircraft power plant design included the Wright R- 3350, which had 2 rows of 9 cylinders each, which produced 2500 horsepower, and the Pratt and Whitney R-4360, aka. "the Corncob engine", which had 4 rows of 7 cylinders each, which produced 3500 horsepower.

The R-4360 had dual ignition for back up, which meant that each engine had 56 sparkplugs.

The B36 Convair bomber had 6 of these engines in addition to 4 jet engines and was a deterrent in the '40's and '50's.

These magnificent engines soon gave way to turboprop and jet engines, due to their much easier maintenance, repair, and TBO or time between overhauls.

Betcha' didn't know that eh?
