The Circle of Communication - Committed to Teamwork

All of us at MidWestVET thrive on teamwork. Our surgery and internal medicine teams work as a cohesive unit to help parents understand their pet's problems and the options for treatment. We are committed to providing the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art diagnostic evaluation and therapy available to companion animals everywhere.

More importantly, we love partnering with you, our colleagues in primary care! And part of that partnership is keeping each other "in the loop" about our mutual patients. Our communications commitment to you is simple:

  1. We will contact you with our findings and tentative diagnostic/therapeutic plan for the patient on the day of initial examination.
  2. We will forward to you all finalized test results with recommendations as soon as they are available and have been appropriately reviewed.
  3. We will communicate the results of tests performed at MidWestVET with recommendations to pet parents.

Often, we encourage families to return to your hospital or clinic for follow-up diagnostic testing and/or therapy. When finalized results of recommended tests are available, our team is committed to continue working with you to interpret the results, as well as to develop and initiate a treatment plan based on those results.

Of course, to be effective in this endeavor, we need more than the latest test results. We need to know how the patient is doing! So when forwarding follow-up test results to us, we respectfully ask you to provide the following information:

  • A brief update on the patient's clinical history since initial referral to MidWestVET. We need to know if clinical signs have improved, progressed, or remained static.
  • The findings of your most recent physical examination(s), including body weight, TPR, and any new abnormalities. Your PE findings are instrumental in helping us develop a diagnostic and treatment strategy.
  • A list of the patient's current medications and dosages. We recognize you may have needed to make medication changes for a patient, and unfortunately pet parents don't always follow recommendations, so having an up-to-date drug list with dosages is invaluable.
  • New and pertinent information about the patient that may influence diagnostic and/or treatment recommendations.
