Tips From Your Door: | |
Do a visual inspection of your door to decide if you need service before a big storm hits.
Keep you door closed as you check out the following:
1. Door alignment and sections. Check for misalignment of door or door components, or evidence of damage including broken or cracked glass. Inspect the door sections, from inside and outside the garage, for any cracks, dents or buckling.
2. Door attachment. Make sure the jambs and header are properly attached to the structure and visually inspect for any looseness of fasteners or misalignment of the track.
3. Roller brackets and hinges. Check that all roller brackets and hinges are properly attached and are not loose.
4. Spring system. Look for loose cables or any apparent loosening of any other component of the spring system. Do not touch or attempt to adjust or repair the springs or anything to which door spring parts are fastened, such as wood lag bolts, steel brackets, cables, or other like items.

Greetings!
This month's newsletter is all about preparing for the big storm. While not much is brewing yet, the majority of named storms form in August and September, meaning you still have time to prepare by tuning up your door. Included you will find helpful articles to breakdown the importance of updating your door (if you've got something older than 10-15 years) and some tips on how to visually inspect your door for potential hurricane hazards. You'll even find a special offer for any last minute repairs your door may need.
As always, if you have a question or an issue you'd like to see covered please don't hesitate to let us know. You can submit your inquires and ideas through our website; just mention the Newsletter in the body of your question. |

Is Your Home Prepared? | |
Getting the Right Door Means Protecting Your
Entire Home
Let's start off with the question, what does the term wind load mean? Wind loads are tested by measuring the pressure per square foot (PSF) of wind speeds ranging from 85-175 MPH. Both positive and negative wind pressures are tested to cover many weather related scenarios. If your garage door cannot withstand high wind pressures and is blown in, the wind will then enter your garage with nowhere to go but up; out your roof allowing for major damage to your entire home. In the opposite scenario, if you have holes or gaps in the door due to misalignment in sections or tracks, airways are created for wind to enter and exit your garage. The suction created from wind leaving your garage can pull your door right off its tracks, also causing severe damage to your property.
If you have recently (within the past 3 years) purchased a new garage door you were probably told that it meets a certain wind load standard. Your insurance probably approved it as protection for your home and may have even reduced your premium due to the added security. However, these wind load standards change every few years--usually after a major storm--to include protection from higher wind speeds.
Should You Replace Your Door?
If you have a door older than 5-10 years you may not meet the current "hurricane proof" standards as set forth by the International Building Code (IBC). This can lead to rising insurance costs as a homeowner. Additional struts or other types of braces do work to secure the door and may be added on over time, however there is no technical information to support the idea that these add-ons will in fact protect your home. Adding elements that did not originally come with your door is not recognized by building or insurance standards as helping you meet hurricane protection codes.
Your older door might withstand high winds and debris just fine--a quality door can last up to 15 years--but if you have noticeable misalignments or dents in the door sections or tracks it is time to purchase a new door. As mentioned above misalignments can let air into your garage making it susceptible to high wind damage. We want your home and your family to be protected through stormy weather and we pride ourselves on selling products that last. Hurricane rated doors now come in a variety of styles, making it easy (dare say enjoyable) to match your home's exterior while updating your home's protection.

| What Makes a Garage Door Hurricane Proof? | |
The strength of your door lies in its materials; how the door and hardware are originally manufactured, assembled, and tested as a package. The type of steel and quality of hardware used such as springs, tracks, and rollers and how the door is attached to your building structure also play a major part.
The tests a door manufacturer run make a difference in protection quality. Let's use Clopay Garage Doors as an example. The Clopay doors we sell are all built to withstand the South Florida standard of 130-140 MPH winds; out of these doors only some carry an additional impact rating. To be impact rated a separate test is done that requires shooting a 2x4 wooden missile at the garage door to test its ability to withstand flying debris. You will have added security and peace of mind in stormy weather if you've purchased an impact rated door. (This is where those insurance discounts can kick in too!)
Having an insulated or non-insulated door will not affect its hurricane proof status. While there is added weight to an insulated door an un-insulated door protects just as well if you purchase the correct wind load rating.
If you would like more detailed information check out the "WindCode Brochure" and "Technically Speaking Brochure" available on Clopay's website. |
