Greetings!
I attended a rounds discussion last night on VIN ; the Veterinary Information Network on understanding horse behavior. I do not practice equine medicine, but I was interested in what progress has been made in equine behavior and handling. The speaker focused on the horse as a prey animal, and why they respond how they do to threats, stress, sounds and smells. Unfortunately this information was not stressed during lectures back in school yet it is so important. Understanding the species you are handling is essential to providing care that is least stressful for that animal. In short, treat a cat like a cat wants, a dog like a dog and a horse like a horse!
