Do you have a concern about a student but aren't sure what to do?
Instructors interact with their students on campus, online, and within the office setting. As such, instructors are a powerful asset in recognizing students with academic or personal difficulties which threaten their success at UNT.
Here are several ways you can help your students achieve success:
1) START Office Early Alert Response System (EARS)
Concerned about a student? Have a student who has been absent a lot or is just not doing well in class? Follow these steps to submit an Alert through our secure online system -- an EARS Responder will attempt to contact the student and may make referrals to appropriate ON and OFF campus resources.
2) Blackboard Learn
Early Warning System
Is a performance problem emerging or becoming more serious for your student? Instructors use this rule-driven communication tool to send email messages to Students and their Observers when Early Warning System rule criteria are met. (Rules can be based on a test score, calculated column, due date, or course access.)
3) Counseling and Testing Services

Blackboard Learn 9.1 Migration
The University of North Texas is moving to a new learning management system! We will say good-bye to Blackboard Vista 8 and hello to the new Blackboard Learn 9.1. Starting this semester, CLEAR will assist faculty with this upgrade by migrating courses from Blackboard Vista 8 to Blackboard Learn 9.1 and by offering faculty training on the new system. All courses currently on Blackboard Vista 8 must be migrated by end of Fall 2012.
New Features:
- Course Wikis that enable active collaboration around course content.
- An early warning system that allows instructors to send emails to students based on set criteria.
- A new content type that enables instructors to pull data from YouTube, SlideShare, and Flickr.
- Visual indicators in the Grade Center to spot student performance trends.
- A new filing system that allows instructors to upload files either through browsing or by drag and drop.
- Built-in integration with McGraw-Hill.

Outstanding Online Course & Teacher Awards 2012
Each year CLEAR (Center for Learning Enhancement, Assessment, and Redesign) presents awards to recognize outstanding online courses that have been designed or taught by UNT faculty. If you designed or taught a course in 2011 that you think is worthy of consideration for this award , or if you know of a colleague's course that you think should be considered, please fill out the nomination form and send it back to CLEAR by April 20, 2012. You may send your nomination through interoffice mail to Brett Patchen at CLEAR in Chilton Hall or by email to brett.patchen@unt.edu.
This year we are accepting nominations for courses designed or taught in either Blackboard Vista or Blackboard Learn. In addition to the nomination form, you'll find the Quality Matters Rubric. This is the rubric that CLEAR instructional consultants will use to evaluate this year's nominees. If a nominee's course or teaching is selected as "outstanding" or "exemplary", he or she will be notified by early summer. Award presentations will take place during the "Salute to Faculty Excellence Week" event on October 5th, 2012.
In addition to the nomination form, we encourage nominations for outstanding teaching to include examples or comments students have made from discussion posts, email messages, blog posts, etc. that help to illustrate or demonstrate ways in which the instructor interacted with students in the course. Evidence of an instructor's interaction with students in the course and student comments about the course help us evaluate the overall effectiveness of the learning experience. Please protect all student privacy by deleting the name of any student who is part of a dialog, interaction, or comment that is submitted as evidence.
We want to thank all of our online teachers who strive to make learning at UNT an exceptional value. We look forward to receiving your nominations soon.

Coming Soon... the NextGen Boot Camp
The Office of the Provost and the Center for Learning Enhancement, Assessment, and Redesign are pleased to welcome new faculty members into the Next Generation Course Redesign™. With nine new NextGen courses piloting this fall, and the addition of the thirteen newly appointed courses that will pilot in the fall of 2013, the Next Generation Course Redesign Program will continue to support, guide, and partner with outstanding educators to help UNT reach its goal of providing the best undergraduate educational experience in Texas. Faculty will begin their redesign with the NextGen boot camp, to be held in August. This exciting event will serve to jump start the course redesign efforts of the 2012-2013 NextGen faculty. CLEAR team members and other UNT colleagues will walk the NextGen faculty through the entire process of course redesign - giving ample time for those "what if" questions that are so crucial in redesigning - not just face-lifting - a college course. At the completion of the event, NextGen faculty will have the general components in place for the Fall session and will be ready to begin their adventure in redesigning their course to interact with the 21st century.

Establishing a Campus of Gratitude
In order to provide UNT students a way to express their appreciation to teachers who have had a positive impact upon their lives, CLEAR launched the exciting "Thank a Teacher" program. This program, established during Fall 2011, continues every semester to underscore the importance of human connections.
The "Thank a Teacher" Program will be open for students through April, affording students the opportunity to send thank you notes to their teachers who have made a difference in their academic lives at UNT. These notes are generated online through a "Thank a Teacher" website. The notes then become part of an appreciation letter signed by the Provost and sent to each recognized teacher and their Deans and Department Chairs.
For more information on the Thank A Teacher Program, please contact CLEAR's Dr. Nancy Fire.
