Do you have a concern about a student but aren't sure what to do?
Instructors interact with their students on campus, online, and within the office setting. As such, instructors are a powerful asset in recognizing students with academic or personal difficulties which threaten their success at UNT.
Here are several ways you can help your students achieve success:
1) START Office Early Alert Response System (EARS)
Concerned about a student? Have a student who has been absent a lot or is just not doing well in class? Follow these steps to submit an Alert through our secure online system -- an EARS Responder will attempt to contact the student and may make referrals to appropriate ON and OFF campus resources.
2) Blackboard Learn
Early Warning System
Is a performance problem emerging or becoming more serious for your student? Instructors use this rule-driven communication tool to send email messages to Students and their Observers when Early Warning System rule criteria are met. (Rules can be based on a test score, calculated column, due date, or course access.)
3) Counseling and Testing Services
For Faculty, TA/TF and Staff who work with students

This year the event includes an interactive morning session hosted by Apple on the topic Challenge Based Learning. Lunch is provided for those who preregister.
About the UFTL
UNT's University Forum on Teaching & Learning (UFTL) is a one-day annual event that enables faculty, graduate teaching fellows, and staff involved in supporting teaching and learning to share ideas and practices that focus on instructional strategies designed to motivate and engage learners, promote critical thinking skills, and better prepare students for life and work in the 21st century.
This year's event begins with a plenary session, Taking problem based learning to new levels: Exploring Apple's challenge based learning potential for your course! Presented by Mark S. Benno, PH.D., Area Development Manager, Apple and Don Henderson, Senior Manager, Creative Expression for Apple Education, the session focuses on the Challenge Based Learning framework in order to gain a deeper understanding of the process and explore ways in which it can be integrated into the classrooms at UNT.
The plenary session is followed by lunch, a UNT faculty poster session, and an afternoon of smaller break-out sessions on digital media in education, academic integrity, pedagogy and technology, iBooks textbooks for the iPad, and a student panel in which students share their insights about how UNT students learn.
For more information and to register, visit:
The University Forum on Teaching & Learning is sponsored by the Center for Learning Enhancement, Assessment, and Redesign (CLEAR). The UFTL is free and open to all UNT faculty, staff, teaching fellows and assistants, and invited guests from area colleges and universities.

Transformative Instructional Initiative (TII) Fellowships
Summer, 2012: Globalizing your Curriculum
Request for Proposals Due: March 26, 2012
The Center for Learning Enhancement, Assessment, and Redesign (CLEAR) requests proposals from faculty members who wish to become Global Learning Faculty Scholars in the Summer 2012 Transformative Instruction Initiative (TII) - a program which provides support for faculty to enrich their courses through innovative instructional design. The purpose of this program is to increase the number and scope of courses, regardless of discipline, that use a mix of EFFECTIVE and ENGAGING instructional strategies including face to face, online and experiential learning strategies to provide a high level of learning for students and support academic success.
In this TII program, faculty fellows will infuse global learning outcomes into their course to transform course content and learning strategies using current literature on incorporating global perspectives in teaching and learning. Each TII project must incorporate a blend of online, face-to-face, and experiential learning activities to transform a key section of the course.
To apply, please see http://tinyurl.com/TII2012

March & April Thank A Teacher Program Establishing a Campus of Gratitude
In order to provide UNT students a way to express their appreciation to teachers who have had a positive impact upon their lives, CLEAR launched the exciting "Thank a Teacher" program. This program, established during Fall 2011, continues every semester to underscore the importance of human connections.
The "Thank a Teacher" Program will begin again in March and extends through April, affording students the opportunity to send thank you notes to their teachers who have made a difference in their academic lives at UNT. These notes are generated online through a "Thank a Teacher" website. The notes then become part of an appreciation letter signed by the Provost and sent to each recognized teacher and their Deans and Department Chairs.
For more information on the Thank A Teacher Program, please contact CLEAR's Dr. Nancy Fire.

UNTVN: Making Connections Across Campus, Across the State & Across the Globe
The video conference team has been very busy the last several months. We have completed many installations across campus and the UNT System. Most recently we have installed new video conference rooms in the Business Service Center, the UNT System Offices in Dallas, and the Eagle Student Services Center. We have also been working with the new UNT Autism Center to help them retrofit some video conference equipment that was donated for their new location.
We will soon be supporting the 2012 Lone Star Diversity Colloquium (a state-wide effort to connect many Texas colleges and universities via video conference) to support graduate school applications. This allows prospective graduate school students to speak with counselors and officials at their potential institutions without the need to travel from their home college/university.
We are also working with the College of Music supporting their effort to produce a concert with musicians here in Denton and in New Zealand. The concert will be over two-way video with a dedicated low latency audio application. This will be a great challenge for our team but a great initiative by the College of Music.
