5.5m - Rejuvenated

Continuing our efforts to go for Class growth, out of various harbours the use of Evolution and Classic boats have been an excellent instrument to get younger sailors involved, while at the same time some of the Modern owners have taken young crew members on board, in order to make our boats known to a bigger crowd.

Not only have these younger sailors sailed onboard 5.5's, some have rushed through, right onto the steps of Gold, Silver and Bronce; proof of this being shown in the picture from the prizegiving after the French Open, which was sailed in mid May, in front of the Bretagne coastline, out of Brest.

And the winners are: The French Champions

The French Open Championship has been the start to the newly donated 5-Nations Cup, followed by the Austrian Open. Currently FRA 38 (Classic), FRA 47 (Evolution) and SUI 213 (Modern) are leading the results and hopepfully will be showing up at one or more of the following 3 selected National events, in order to defend their leading position.

Upwind competition

Also in other Nations, younger crews are being taken aboard as well as hopefully being given some of the unused boats, in order to get a good feeling for 5.5m sailing.
One of the obstacles the younger sailors are coming across is towing equipment. Please support them with vehicles you can spare or with advice on what to choose best, good rental offers as well as offering unsused equipment and boats.

Compared to the times when I started sailing in the 70's, the abundance of sailboat classes being active is immense and we must not wait for people approaching us. We have to go out and tell them personally about our own racing experience and the particular attractive features, which our boats - irrespective of their age - can offer.

So, my dear Sales Team, get the message out there!

Yours,

Kaspar

Fleet News

Austria

The Austrian Open Championship has been held over the last weekend, on beautiful Wolfgangsee. With many participants from Switzerland a total of 5 races were sailed, the winner being SUI 213, followed by AUT 21 and SUI 192 coming in 3rd. The best Evolution boat was AUT 14, a boat which we do welcome back to 5.5m racing.

Australia

We had foreseen to be giving a European Modern 5.5m boat to an Australian crew, for racing in the Scandinavian Gold Cup races. While it is great news that Dave is informing about Australian 5.5m sailors becoming parents, the year 2012 will now be understandibly difficult for travels.

Bahamas

Craig has confirmed, that Gavin McKinney will do the Gold Cup for The Bahamas. There has been no fleet activity in The Bahamas over the winter as the yachts are in Europe. Craig has offered Silver Fox for a Danish participation in The Scandinavian Gold Cup. Silver Fox and John B will also go to Hankoe Race Week and the Norwegian 5.5m Open Championship in Risoer.

Canada

John Lister reports on winning local races with 5.5 CAN 22 "Nantoria", one after the other and he has recently purchased another Classic 5.5 CAN 3 "Jill", which is in need of restoration. With "Jill" he got hold of a trailer, so that the project of participating in a North American 5.5m race meeting can be made reality, in summer 2012.

France

The French Open results and images, plus a report in French can be seen on the National French 5.5m Website, which is an excellent example of a constantly updated and informative medium for the Class. You can access it via our International 5.5m site, going to Contact | Fleets, then to France. But also full info in English will shortly be placed in the News section of the International 5.5m website.

French Open 2012: And there was wind!

In addition to the National French 5.5m website and the use of the 5.5m Facebook site, the French 5.5m Class Association has opened a user group with the French Classic Yacht Club, in order to exchange information on races, crewing and more:

The French fleet is also informing about a number of boats being for sale and we do hope that we can see them racing in new ownership on French waters, soon. Out of the boats which are mentioned on the National French website, here is one example, a 5.5m Classic which was superbly restored and which Christian Hauvette had planned to race.

Germany

The German 5.5m Class Association  has been racing their first regatta of the year in Berlin, which has been won by GER 25.

Berlin Start-up 2012: "Willi Lehmann Preis" with International participation
The next regional race will be sailed on the Alster Lake, "Bronia Preis" in early June, organized by the NRV.

The German Open Silver will be carried to the Netherlands, to be given to the winning participants of the combined Dutch Open, there, One new trophy will be sailed for the first time: The LOVANA PREIS has been donated by Hans-Jürgen Queisser, for the best helming sailor(ess) under the age of 35.

Italy

The  Italian Class Association has been racing their May regatta in Laveno, which was won by ITA 73. Regretfully, ROLEX moved out of the Portofino event, which finally was cancelled by the YCI. However YCI has offered the 5.5's future racing and the Italian 5.5m Class Association will be talking to them about Italian Open races in Portofino and Genua. Also it is a plan to move the Italian pledge for a 5.5m World Championship to 2015 and to have YCI involved there as well.

Norway

The Risoer fleet reports: We have had 3 Friday regattas and the Spring Regatta, which was won by Silver Fox, sailed by Tom Nysted. The weekend 8-10 June, we sail the usual Friday Regatta, and on Saturday we sail Lyngør Rundt, an offshore race of approximately 20 nautical miles. That is really great fun, and probably several more boats will be in the water by then.

We are preparing for Norwegian Open, and the details are gradually falling into place.  We are really looking forward to seeing other sailors in Risør, with Norwegian Open and Risør International Chamber Music Festival being arranged at the same time. It will surely be Risør at its most  cosmopolitan!    It. seems that we will be at least 17 boats, maybe as many as 20+.

Switzerland

The May races on the Lake of Geneva in Morges and Rolle have seen good participation and a double winner: 5.5 SUI 213 came in best in both events. Another highlight has been to see SUI 183 reappearing in 5.5m races in Switzerland, to add to the Evolution competitors.

U.S.A.

Preparations are under way to establish 5.5m racing activities in Northern America, starting with one or two race events on the US-East coast. We are checking options to also include the Columbia 5.5m Class.
