Sailing Downhill

The Autumn races on the Lake of Thun in early Octobre combined with the downhill races of Gstaad in early March are the annual Ski-Yachting event for the International 5.5m Class, together with sailors of the Star and Dragon Classes.

Many 5.5m sailors participated in the 2012 edition of the Ski-Race part, which has again been perfectly organized by the Gstaad Yacht Club. Happy faces all around, sunshine, ideal snow conditions and a very well prepared side programme, organized by the Swiss 5.5m Class Association, made it a very memorable time.

Ambitious racing followed:

But in the end, there could only be one winner: The team of 5.5 SUI 201, with Tobias Isler & Crew!

All of us then joined to present the latest promotional tool, the newly designed 5.5m banners, which will be used on trailers in regatta destinations, in order to present the Class to other sailors. In the same style, we are offering stickers for trailer boxes. All participants, who have registered for the next World Championship can get these stickers by post, just write to: racing@5.5class.org . We will also be sending pdf files to the National Class Associations, for local reprint.

Promoting the Class

Also on the promotional side of things: Thierry recently launched the Class Facebook Page. Check it out and interact with fellow members, friends and other passionate sailors from around the world!

With spring time coming in the Northern Hemisphere please continue with personal contacts as well and do promote our Class in your local Clubhouses and invite your sailor friends aboard, to experience these true racing machines of ours, irrespectively of the age they might have - boats and target group that is.

Thank you for your support!

Yours,

Kaspar

Fleet News

Australia

The Australian Gold-Cup team has been chosen during the Australian Nationals in March. Pictures and results are expected, but have not yet arrived. In the end, we are still looking for charter-boats for our friends from downunder, both for the Gold Cup and for the Worlds.

Curaçao

Please wait with your Hyatt-hotel bookings, further info will follow shortly from the organizers. For the freight rates, the frequent changes in bunker charges are making bookings not easy, yet, but new offers are expected shortly from our Dutch friends and from a shipping line in Hamburg, in order to complete the preparations for the Worlds in January 2013 in Carribbean waters.

Denmark

Following the kind gesture from Craig to see BAH 20 sail as DEN 20 in the Gold Cup this year, Bjoern is trying to convince the local owner of DEN 17 (ex BAH 17) to join the Worlds as well. Our friends from 5.5 GER 26, who live in Denmark, have also already registered for the Worlds.

Germany

On the weekend of Skiing in Gstaad, three 5.5m friends from Greifswald travelled to Tannay/Geneva, to - courtesy of Philippe Kolly - pick up 5.5 SUI 35, which will be restored and then raced again as 5.5 GER 76, possibly already during Kiel Week in 2012. The Musée de Léman and the Copponex family are keeping contact.

SUI 35
A bit of work ahead - but worthwhile it is

In the Kolly Yacht yard a number of perfectly suited Evolution boats were found, which are awaiting to be brought back to the racing scence.

SUI 130
Two times World Champion - to become Evolution Champion, soon?

And, in order to further build-up the Modern fleet in Northern Germany, these two boats are being actively offered: 5.5 SUI 207 and 5.5 NOR 65, in addition to the ones shown in the Classified section of the International 5.5m website.

Norway

Our sailing friends from Risoer are in full preparations for the first 5.5m Norwegian Open to be held in many years. The big local fleet will see visitors from Oslo and abroad. 5.5 GER 75 plans - weather permitting - to sail over from Denmark, accompanied by a security boat.

Sweden

In Sweden, with 5.5 SWE 24 the first 5.5m boat has entered the registration list for the 1912-2012 Olympic memorial event in Nynäshamn, for exciting summer races. And, as in previous years, 5.5 SWE 50 will be travelling to Boltenhagen, to race the Royal Kaag Classic Cup and the World Championship. Other SWE boats - Be Welcome to these events!

Switzerland

On the Lake of Zürich a new Spring time regatta for 5.5m boats has been initiated for end April. The extensive programme is set, craning will be organized; please contact our Swiss Class Association for further details. And, then the wish of ISAF has become reality, with an official invitation extended by the SNG to our Class, to join the International Metre regatta Coupe Banque Privée Edmond de Rothschild, for which our Swiss friends are asking for ample 5.5m participation, both from the other Swiss Lakes as well as from the neighbouring 5.5m countries.
