Winter Newsletter - February 2011

Greetings!

Throughout our city we are celebrating and recognizing the many accomplishments of African Americans in our society; from modern day heroes to the palm barriers of the past, Black History month is about both acknowledging the triumph and recognizing the obstacles that stand in our way.  Here at BPI we are doing both, every day.

Whether celebrating Black History month with the fathers who participate in our Male and Father Engagement program or coaching parents in partnership with Multnomah Education Service District; our work speaks to the potential and dreams of parents and caregivers in our community.  Nina Tatum, great-grandmother of 21-month old Nathen, highlights one of our many triumphs:

Nathen

"I would like to thank the In-Home staff at BPI for her help and encouragement. After screening my great-grandson, what could have developed into a real problem was avoided. I noticed he stop talking and responding when we called his name. We discovered that he had a hearing loss and needed surgery to correct the problem. The screening showed his speech was very delayed, and I was very worried. The BPI In-Home staff person told me about Multnomah Early Intervention Program. She told me they would give him speech therapy. He has his own therapist who comes to my home and works with him one on one. This is all provided free of charge. He is doing so much better now! I recommend BPI to my friends and family because I know they will get the help they need."

BPI's work is simple; provide heads of households with the necessary support and tools to ensure family transformation. For BPI, celebrating Black history month is not about sitting on the sidelines, it's about digging in.  Please learn more about our work, our upcoming Parent University classes, Parent Symposium, or our next Male & Father Engagement session.

Sincerely,
