Greetings!

The school year is winding down and summer is about to gear up! However, before I jump into the programs and what we are offering this summer, allow me this opportunity to give you an idea of what Gateways Learning is truly about. We are more than just a provider of after-school programs for children. We aim to create gateways to opportunities for parents, their children and anyone else by looking at future possibilities and the concerns that may arise.

While TECH, MEDIA and ARTS is an important division at GL, we also offer three other divisions that have had and are having incredible success. We invite you to explore these other programs with us and to look at what Gateways is able to offer you and/or your children. Some comes and explore the realms of the impossible with us!

Overview of our programs

TECH, MEDIA, ARTS - Summer Camps
With school winding down, summer is just around the corner. That means a lot of kids are going to be having a ton of fun this July and August with satisfied parents seeing their kids learning invaluable skills.

Academic Programs
In the past, we have also hosted a lot of ESL programs and have had students from Korea, China and Saudi Arabia take our classes. In the next couple of months we will be developing our site to expand our outlook into these exciting programs. We have had some excellent teachers and have seen some great results because of it. We look forward to expanding our past success and creating new opportunities with you, our students .

Adult Education
We will also explore some ethical concerns and begin to introduce more adult-oriented content for you, our readers.

Consulting
Our immersive technology is almost ready to be open to our customers. While we will be hosting an environment for our students to learn about science and technology, we will also be using this environment to showcase for businesses and schools. In our next newsletter, we will hopefully have this environment ready to showcase with free promotions.

Stay tuned!!

TECH'IN IT OUT

Technology has been advancing so quickly, that it often outpaces the public education system, and its ability to keep up. Students pursuing a high-tech career in the TECH, MEDIA & ARTS industries need more hands-on experience with the tools of their trades. Only then are the gateways truly open for them.

This diagram is a simplistic tool to show where our classes can lead. I believe that in the future, more and more businesses will return to internships and apprenticeships with training through their own programs rather than relying strictly on universities and colleges. There is a great report called, The Supply of Information Technology Workers in the United States, by the Computing Research Association (CRA), that delves deeper into this subject matter.

When I worked as a environmental techie in the manufacturing industry most of my learning came from the workplace and not from my university background. In many manufacturing environments, there is big shortage of skilled workers and this will be a great way to bridge the gap between training and the workplace. We hope to be the education providers that is able to bridge this gap.

Playing God (BBC Documentary 2012)
As a company that advances the concepts of S.T.E.M, we are also concerned with aspects such as the balance between benefit and consequence, like those revealed in the video provided below. As a company, we don't believe it is ethical to promote S.T.E.M. without looking at the moral ramifications of unfettered technology. As Pro. Malcolm said in Jurassic Park, "Click here for a sound clip".  As an owner of Gateways, I have deep concerns of where genetic engineering, nano technology and A.I. is so interested in leaving our humanity behind. A movement called transhumanism is becoming very popular in some influential circles and will have very dramatic effects on how humanity interacts with our environment. The question we need to ask is if this is pure science or if this is pseudo-science masquerading as such?

Is the internet hurting our children?
As a company, we are very interested in the development of our minds and how they are affected by outside stimulus. The movie, "what the bleep do we know" takes a in-depth look on the way we process the information around us and how our brains respond to our cultural conditioning. The question is this: are we conditioning our learning environments for success or are we lessening the ability for the students to learn?

(CNN) - Amid the buzz over the Facebook IPO, the ever-evolving theories about how Twitter is reshaping our communications and speculation about where the next social media-enabled protest or revolution will occur, there is an important question we've largely ignored, "What are the real effects of all this, on the huge segment of the population most affected by social media themselves: our children and our teens?"
