Greetings!

Last semester was our best ever as we expanded into Surrey. These programs were met with great enthusiasm and had great attendance. Working with the Surrey School District and others, we hope to continue to offer exciting programs. We are hoping to expand even further into Vancouver and set up another centre in the Vancouver area. There is an awakening in our great country and we are realizing the importance of leading in the fields of science and tech.

With China's increased presence in the technological world, one of the best investments we can give to our kids is to have them prepare for tomorrow. By equipping our students with the skills to become pioneers in the field of science and technology, we are bridging the gap between the impossible and possible!

In this issue, we will look at the following topics;

Spring Classes in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland
Mindstorms 3.2 is running at Walnut Grove
Spring Programs starting in April at Gateways Learning Centre
Eythor Bender demos human exoskeletons
12 year old prodigy challenges Einstein theories
Laszlo Kovaks - Meet our Tech Guru!
Little Smarties - Great beginnings.
Tutoring "Me Casa, Su Casa"
Summer Camps coming soon.

Our new classes and programs for Spring 2011

Mindstorms 3.2

If your son or daughter has taken Mindstorms 3.1 and wants to move to the next level. Walnut Grove Community Centre is putting on classes every Wednesday at 5:45pm to 7:45pm.

Robotics Engineering 3.2 (Mindstorms 3.2): LEGOŽ MINDSTORMS Education -

Students aged 10 to 16+ who have finished Mindstorms 3.1 can take the learning experience further with this course. In Mindstorms 3.2, students are taken to the next level of STEM with more complex engineering projects. This course expands on their problem solving skills as they learn new concepts such as logic, looping, switches, cases, controllers, remote controls, and more. The emphasis of Mindstorms 3.2 is on programming structures, with increased focus on using logic and switches in programming. The projects will include several different vehicles that are remote controlled by a user and other vehicles that are fully autonomous. This course is concluded with a mini "Battle Bots" competition where students' robots compete against each other. Learning outcomes are: understanding of loops, switches, bluetooth, sending/receiving messages, and programming with logic. Prerequisites are: Mindstorms 3.1 and wanting to learn more!

Laszlo Kovacs, our Tech Guru
Laszlo graduated from the University of British Columbia in May 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science with a major in Cognitive Systems and Intelligent Design Stream. What all that really means is that he studied Artificial Intelligence. His area of interest is robotics, and especially teaching robotics to kids. He believes that a hands on, fun, and engaging approach is the way to teach young kids about the sciences (actually everything).

He currently teaches math, physics and chemistry. He is also the instructor of the Lego Club and the Lego Robots workshops. Laszlo's ambition is to challenge and help kids learn and go beyond what is merely required: to explore new problems and find innovative solutions. Ultimately, Laszlo is a fun and optimistic guy who always sees the bright side of things. If you run into him, say Hi!

One of the reasons gateways is so successful is because of our amazing teachers. To meet more of our teachers, please visit our site; http://www.gatewaysinternational.ca/staff.htm

Little Smarties - Small Beginnings

Little Smarties has been created  for young minds that are impressionable. What they learn as preschoolers will impact their future and performance as they climb the academic ladder. Parents want to give their children that edge and it's so important to know that your child is in a program that enables your child to be the best. Playschool versus preschool is far more advantageous as it gives your children the head start and makes the most of this window of learning to build a strong foundation.

We offer classes at Gateways Learning Centre; Gateway's Schedule.

Tutoring "Me Casa, Su Casa"

Gateways Learning Centre is a place where you can come to us to learn, but we can also come to you. Whether it is in person or online, our teachers love to interact with children and develop skills sets that will ensure success. Currently we have over 50 students at any one time and many of which are excelling in their studies. Many of our tutoring students are Asian, but my hope is that the Canadian market begins to invest in this area. This is definitely one of our strengths. We also encourage parents to take our gifted programs at their house. Where they can see the progress of their children right at home.
