Proper lubricants are critical for dependable cooling tower operation.
Using common motor oil in sleeve bearings, for example, will wipe them out in short order.
Never remove an oil cup and substitute a zerk fitting.
Consider removing exceptionally long lube lines and greasing (or oiling) bearings up close where they can be observed during the process. Sometimes, lube lines aren't even connected!
Be careful not to ruin the protective shield when greasing ball bearings.
Don't use just any old grease or oil. Instead, get a grease gun or oil container and mark it 'Cooling Tower'. Fill it with lubricant recommended by the cooling tower manufacturer and keep it nearby- out of the weather. Consult the maintenance manual for recommended lubrication intervals and keep a log when service is performed.
Replacing bearings can be difficult particularly at the edge of a roof or when optional accessories such as sound attenuators are in the way. Good maintenance will extend bearing life and save $.
