Speaker- Trainer- Consultant

Greetings!

I just returned from a great training session in Marina Del Rey, California.   As most trainings go, you get new ideas and you meet great people. This training session was no exception. I met two trainers who shared their insights on team building, leadership and coaching. As we dove deeper into the subject of coaching and leadership, we discussed how great leaders are always finding ways to improve, and part of that improvement is seeking feedback on their behavior.

My two fellow trainers shared an easy, fun activity you can do at home to help you grow as a leader by receiving feedback from the people who have the most insight about you, and the most concern for your improvement...your family and friends. Read below to learn more about these two activities.

Great reflecting!

Mirror Mirror On The Wall

Successful people want to get better. It is part of their DNA to find ways to improve. Part of getting better, stronger and more successful is getting feedback on our behaviors...especially those that we may not see ourselves. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have a mirror held up to us so we could see how we look, sound and act towards others? The good news is that you have this mirror in the form of family and friends at home. Let me explain. Your family and friends are the ones that see you and interact with you the most and care the most about your welfare (well at least this is how it should be:) They are often the best & most willing people in your lives to reflect back to you how you think, act and behave towards others.

Here are two fun ways that your family and friends can give you the critical feedback you need to succeed and grow:

  • Charades- we all know the fun game that has one person think of an object, TV show, play or catchy phrase and then try to act those out in front of a group of people that will guess which one we are trying to portray.   The twist on this game is that you use a family member as the object to act out and have the audience guess. What a great way to see how you act from another person's eyes.

  • Meal time- the next time you sit down as a family for a meal, choose the person on your right to act out for the entire meal. Copy their voice, thinking and mannerisms for the entire meal.   Remember they will be portraying you as well and you will quickly gain insights into how you come across.

Right about now you may be thinking....wow this could get mean-spirited. The key to success with these two games is to come to them with an open mind and the curiosity to learn from how others see you. What you don't want to do is become defensive and hurt but rather open and curious. Learn to laugh at yourself and have fun with these games.

Question for You:

Are you a successful person who wants to get even better?

Action for You:

Try these two fun activities to help you see, hear and learn how you come across to others from those that care about you the most.
