 Monday Motivation

September 27th, 2010Issue No.6
Dear ;

In this edition we will once again explore the concept of stretching your way of thinking and communicating into an area that you least prefer.  The irony is that these small stretches will actually enhance your current way of thinking.

Great Stretching!

Some Pain...... But A Whole Lot of Gain
Without going beyond his own nature, one cannot achieve ultimate wisdom.

Quote from the book The Creative Brain by Ned Herrmann

In my last newsletter I introduced the concept of multi-dominant thinking and how most of us use two or three of these styles

of thinking each and every day ( see chart below). I also shared that a few people use all four quadrants at one time.  I am not advocating that everyone try and become whole brained.  However, the more you can tap into each of these styles when needed, the more successful you will become.  Your dominant ways of thinking are your strengths.  If you could use these dominant styles eighty percent of the time in your personal and professional lives you will find the most success!

I believe firmly in the philosophy of focusing on your strengths but I also believe that if you spend a small amount of time working your less dominant thinking muscle then your dominant thinking will be enhanced.    A perfect example of this paradox lies in the work of Dr. Maria Montessori.  As a physician, she observed children in a school setting  for many years and found that a structured learning environment (B Quadrant) allowed the student to find items quickly and explore their application in depth which allowed them to become more creative in seeing other applications (D Quadrant).

What quadrant would you like to develop to enhance your dominance? If you go beyond your current dominance, you may be better able to solve a problem that has been nagging at you for a long time. Look to stretch in an opposing quadrant if possible.  An A Quadrant thinker will enhance his analytical abilities by adding emotions (C Quadrant) to his decision making.  So look for the quadrant below that you would like to explore further and try one of these activities.

A Quadrant

  • Read and understand the annual or financial report of your organization
  • Calculate your miles per gallon during your next trip

B Quadrant

  • Set a time for finishing a project and finish it earlier than planned
  • Create a "things to do " list and check off items when done

C Quadrant

  •  Spontaneously recognize another employee or person  in a way that is personal and meaningful
  • Volunteer to assist a co-worker on a company project

D Quadrant

  • Set aside time for idea generation and think at least one "crazy" idea per day
  • Instigate a brainstorming session on an important issue
