When Will They Make Up Their Mind?
Once he makes up his mind, he is full of indecision (about Dwight D. Eisenhower)

Herrmann Whole Brain Model
HBDI Whole Brain Model
So far, we have explored the four unique styles of thinking and communicating according to Ned Herrmann's Whole Brain Model.  We learned that A Quadrants are task oriented like Mr. Spock from Star Trek.  B Quadrants like to keep things safe and orderly like the Rabitt from Winnie the Pooh.  C Quadrants enjoy talking about feelings and emotions like poet Maya Angelou.  And last week we introduced the D Quadrant thinker who enjoys starting projects and taking risks.  By now you may see yourself in all four of these quadrants.  If you so, you are absolutely correct!  Two thirds of the population prefers two or three of these ways of thinking at any give time. We call these folks "multi-dominant" thinkers.  For instance, if you prefer the A and B Quadrants, you are known as left brained.  If you prefer the C and D Quadrants, you are right brained.   Only six percent of the population prefers one of these styles.  And even more surprising....two percent of the population prefers all four of these styles at the same time!  We call these thinkers "whole-brained" and they often represent CEO's, Human Resource professionals and Executive Secretaries. While one advantage of whole brained thinking is being flexible with other styles, the disadvantage is indecisiveness.  When working with these multi-dominant or whole brained thinkers, be patient with them as their mind walks through each quadrant while trying to find the best solution.

Summary of Tips for Communicating More Effectively with
Multi-Dominant or Whole Brain Thinkers (Dwight D. Eisenhower)

  • Make sure to offer your viewpoint as this may sway their indecisiveness
  • Be patient as you watch them walk through each quadrant
  • To better understand them try walking through each quadrant yourself when making a decision. What are the facts? Who will be in control? How will it affect others? Have we thought of all possibilities?
