"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."  (James 1:2-4

This Week's Opening Quote -

"From the beginning, Christianity was certainly a way of life; the salvation that it offered was a salvation from sin, and salvation from sin appeared not merely in a blessed hope but also in an immediate moral change. The early Christians, to the astonishment of their neighbors, lived a strange new kind of life-a life of honesty, of purity and of unselfishness. And from the Christian community all other types of life were excluded in the strictest way. From the beginning Christianity was certainly a life."
(
J. Gresham Machen, 1881-1937, influential conservative American theologian)

This Week's Scripture -
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. . . ."
(Hebrews 12:1, English Standard Version)

This Week's Prayer -

"Father in heaven, I know that all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God - including me. I know the wages of sin is death. I know Jesus came to this earth to pay the penalty for my sin and for the sin of all eternity, suffering Your wrath on my behalf. All who have declared Your Son as Lord and Savior are now a part of the great cloud of witnesses. I am so grateful to have joined those in the cloud! Thank You, Lord! So, please, Lord, help me to resist temptation and lay aside every affection, encumbrance, sin, and activity which prevents me from running the race of life well. Help me to endure and persevere, that I might bring You honor and glory through my life. So help me, God. Amen."

At the September meeting of West Central Activities Conference Athletic Directors, Des Moines Christian was awarded the All-Athletics Championship for the 2011-2012 school year! The award recognizes the overall performance of all sports during a school year - quite an accomplishment for a school which does not have a cross country team or wrestling program! I praise God for the leadership of our athletic director, coaches, and student-athletes during this past school year! God has been honored and glorified by excellence in our athletic program! If you are interested in the final standings and point total by school, please click here.

LAST CALL: New families and new staff - Thank you for choosing DMCS!  We would like to get to know you better. Join us for a complimentary New Family Night tailgater before the varsity football game on Friday, September 7 at 6:00 p.m. at Johnston High School Stadium (6501 NW 62 Avenue). Check in at the tailgater, and we will give each family member a complimentary admission ticket for the game.  Bring some lawn chairs, and come hungry!  Questions: Call Peggy Lettow in the Development Office at 252-2496.

Are you looking for a full-time or part-time job? Do you love young children? Do you have a heart for teaching children biblical truth? Do you love a Christ-centered culture? Please call the Early Education Office to inquire about openings in Des Moines Christian pre-school and child care! We'd love to hear from you at 252-2482.

Do you know Secondary Guidance Counselor Cindy Kostek? You should! Cindy was an All-American Sprinter at The University of Nebraska. (Go, Huskers!) Her husband Mark was an All-American javelin thrower at The University of Kansas. (Go, Jayhawks!)   Cindy and Mark have been married for 30 glorious years!   They have four children, all of whom are graduates of Des Moines Christian: Tatum (which is Cindy's maiden name), Tom, Leah, and Kate. (Go, Lions!) The athletic gene pool is really strong; all four of the Kostek offspring were stars in their respective sports - football, volleyball, softball, and track. And that's just Leah. (Just kidding. She could have played football!) Tom played football at Drake University. Leah and Kate have played volleyball at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota. (Go, Eagles!) Cindy and Mark have cut a regular path from Des Moines to the Cities for Saturday tournaments. I can't wait to see the athletic abilities of the Kostek grandchildren! Tatum is married and an excellent local hair stylist, if you're looking for expertise in this arena. Tom and Leah, twins, are wearing big boy and big girl pants in the work world now. Leah is a teacher and a coach; Tom, a businessman. Leah is married to Dan Engskov, who is a staff accountant in the Twin-Cities. I was honored to officiate Leah and Dan's wedding. Mark came first to Des Moines as the Director of the Drake Relays; he then expertly helped raise millions of dollars for the Athletic Department as an Associate Athletic Director. Now, he works for the Greater Des Moines Sports Commission, attracting major collegiate and professional sporting events to Central Iowa; for instance, as an Internationally-Certified Track and Field Official, Mark successfully courted the NCAA to locate the Division-I track and field championships at Drake Stadium for the past two summers. Cindy went from teaching in a Christian school in Nebraska to serving as our excellent Secondary Guidance Counselor, Varsity Volleyball Coach, and Track Coach for now her 13th year! I praise the Lord for the wonderful Kostek family, all of whom have greatly enriched our community over the years.

DMCS needs a lunchroom server who can work between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., 2-3 days per week. The job requires set-up of the food service line, serving lunches, and the clean-up and sanitization of the kitchen after the lunch period. The starting rate of pay is $8.50 per hour. To apply, please submit your complete application to Christy Christensen. Applications are available at the DMC website.

Are you ready to have some fun at DMCS?  Becoming a Homeroom Parent is fun and easy!   Put a smile on your child's face, and be a part of organizing the classroom parties.  Please contact Pam Baker at 250-5584 if you are interested or have questions.  PTF is here to help!

I ALWAYS love to stand in front of an Elementary Chapel audience.  And chapel organizer Carmen Kopf is consistently generous is scheduling me to do so.  Wednesday, September 5, 2012 was no difference.  On this day, though, I stood at the BACK of the audience to start my exhortation at the chapel. If you would like to understand why and read the outline of my chapel message, "Pray Without Ceasing," please click here.

Elementary Chapel on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 -

Multi-Purpose Room - 8:45-9:10 a.m. - Mrs. Pam Wilson and Mr. Michael Wilson

Elementary Chapel on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 -

You are welcome to attend chapel at any time!

I was discouraged and throwing a pity party for myself when I started my day at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Then I was encouraged and blessed at 6:30 a.m.! And, again, such was the case at 12:00 p.m.! Dr. Brian Brown, Director of the Drake Relays and Associate Athletic Director at Drake University, brought me out of my doldrums with a rousing message at morning and afternoon CrossTrainers (as a part of a special "Sports and Culture" series). If you would like to read my summary of Dr. Brown's message, "Lighten Up!" please click here.
